As for Groce, I can not stand that man. His meltdown after the the tech on an Akron player in the second half was ridiculous. He was being held back by players, assistant coaches, seemed to make contact with the refs.
It felt like it could've been a delay of game because it dragged out so long. At one point a bit later he was screaming in the refs ear with his chin physically resting on the refs shoulder. I've never seen someone do more to get a tech and not get one. That man has the most punchable face in college basketball and it isn't even close.

OMG YES!

Bobby Hurley is a close second.

Now, I know you're going to be shocked by this, but Bobby just got a technical in their game against USC. I hope you're sitting down when you read this! 03-lmfao

Ah good call. Really punchable face.

Has anyone heard anything about Moss? I didn't see any hardware on his knee last night. Maybe a good sign it wasn't as bad as it initially looked?

Just a couple of observations. Is it just me or are basketball coaches the worst (or maybe they’re just easier to see). Replay in baseball seemed to end most of the Billy Martin, Earl Weaver and Lou Piniella fireworks. Helped football too. In hockey they wear ties so they leave the arguing to the players.

As far as the game I’ve seen that game before. The better team takes a big lead comes out flat and can’t turn it back on and loses. They’re still the better team and because they held on last night we didn’t accomplish much. Sorry but I just don’t think this team has the guard play to be anything more than an average MAC team. We will see.

So I know a guy that likes to lay down wagers. I says to the guy…look, it the MAC. No guards, no chance I lay my hard earned $ on them. Now, I hate saying that to a guy who wants to bet on KSU…

But the truth is, no guards, no chance.

Indeed ...Kent has had many elite MAC-level guards over the years.

But right now even an above average Kent guard -- Derek Jackson, Jordan Mincy, Rod Sherman -- would probably make this team at least 2-3 wins better, if not more.

I think we all knew that guard play would be down over last season, and that this team wouldn't be as good as last year's. But I feel that this team could compete for one of the top four seeds had it not lost so many rotation players to injury.

It's interesting you threw Mincy in there. I've always kind of thought of Gio as a slightly better Mincy. By all accounts Mincy was a great leader but I think it's easy to forget because he played on some really good teams that he didn't have much statistical impact on games. Here's some numbers between the two.

Career:
Mincy: 3.1 ppg, 2.6 apg, 1.5 topg, 0.9 spg, 38% FG, 3.8 Defensive Win Shares.
Career High: 5.4 ppg, 3.6 apg, 1.7 topg, 1.5 spg, 46.1% FG, 1.4 DWS.

Gio: 7.1 ppg, 2.7 apg, 1.3 topg, 1.1 spg, 39.5 FG, 4.0 DWS.
Career High: 9.1 ppg, 4.1 apg, 2.4 topg, 1.4 spg, 48.8% FG, 1.2 DWS.

It's been kind of confusing my why people are acting like we don't have a true PG. Maybe it's because he took a back seat to Carry the last two years, but Gio is a true PG and his body of work stacks up nicely against many of the true PGs we've had. He's just had a rough first half of this season particularly with TOs and 3pt shooting. Hopefully Friday can be the start of that turning around.

I know this isn’t 100% true but when I hear “pure point guard” I think of undersized point guard who can’t create a shot and is a defensive liability.
If they prove otherwise Ok but they usually don’t.

I think you're right about Gio statistically, but there is one major difference ... and Mincy is a perfect example ... all those guards had a definite defensive personality and leadership quality about them, particularly on the court. That is where Gio is a step behind, IMO.

Absolutely right! Those 3 guards were tenacious defenders and at many times disrupted games on their own. I like Gio but as all-around players, he’s not in the same boat as these 3.

Damn. Thanks for the update. That's usually at least a year recovery (assuming you mean torn ACL) so probably means we won't be seeing him next year either.

We weren’t going to play them again anyway. Pairings made by matching teams in the standings, with adjustments to avoid teams playing twice.

I understand all of this. It was just my way of promoting......dare I say.....the Zips and the Dukes. Nevermind. I'm driving to Hueston Woods that weekend and going to watch the Harvard of the Midwest play whoever they are playing.

These days, an ACL can be a 9 month injury. Lots of factors.
