They hit wide open 3’s all night long.. I’ve seen them play 4 or 5 games and they never hit 3’s like tonight, reason being the 3’s they took against the teams I watched them play against didn’t give them wide open looks like we did.. We have given wide open 3’s all year long.. of course you have to make them but it’s much easier when no one is guarding you..

Agree. God, they shot the lights out, seemingly. Our defense was pretty poor, however, with UTSA getting lots of wide-open shots.

Some of the people here are so miserable that we could win out all the way to a national championship and there would be threads complaining after the game.

Fan message boards have all kinds. Happy clappers, I suppose like yourself, that just clap at every win regardless. Some are more analytical and notice trends that might hurt us against real competition. Neither way to Fan is wrong

Sure I'll play. 08-09 season struggled with Chattanooga, Ark Little Rock, Tulsa, UTEP, Tulane in the conference tourney and Cal State in the NCAAs.

07-08 is probably what you have in mind. Only struggle wins were at home to Marshall and on the road at the infamous UAB game.

I'm sure there are some in the other seasons too. Every good team has the close head scratch games. I guess the alarm is how we are having these in a row

There’s a happy medium somewhere but the miserables seem to be always miserable come win or loss. Every week good teams are getting upset, Kansas just lost to mediocre UCF who record looks impressive but eyeballing it, they beat up on poor teams and lost to the good teams and yet they upset mighty Kansas

I don't think we're overrated. In the new era of college basketball, more and more schools are building brand new teams almost every season. All of those teams are having to learn to play together. I think this year's Memphis team is doing a better job than most, but gelling and looking consistently decent is still going to take time. If we still look like this going into March then that will be cause for alarm.

As for the team with Tomlin, I think that's just due to him being added in the middle of the season. He had no preseason practice with the guys. I hopefully things will look better there come the end of February.

Cal’s #2 team almost lost to #15 UC somebody in the first round of the tournament.
The great defender Robert Sallie who averaged less than 5 points a game starting wooshing threes and cal gave him a green light. Sallie scored 35 pts that game.

My point is Defense is so overrated .

I agree. If we are overrated it is not by much. I feel like we are in the top 15. I wouldnt put us much higher at this point, but we still have players learning to play with each other. I think we can be legitimate top 10 by tournament time.

If every team in top 25 except for us were to lose on a single night it would have nothing to do with how we have played the past 5 games.

No idea if it is a motivational issue, laziness or trying to play too many players.

But something is off right now and the team is just not playing up to potential.

This isn't a bad team, a bad team doesn't win three straight against ranked teams.

When the focus and energy is there, this team can play with anyone.

But for some reason over the last 5 games there is long periods where the focus and energy is missing.

To adopt an old saying...if every team you play has their best shooting game against you...it's your defense.

I think KenPom and the metrics are right on target. This team is probably around the 40th best in the country right now.

Your memory is lazy also. We only blasted teams in 2 years under Cal: 06-07 and 07-08. There was one consistent thing in all those games: Joey Dorsey didn't foul out.

Agree. Our defense has not been the same since the UVa game. Following that game, we added Tomlin. Then the subsequent loss of our best perimeter defender. We're still adjusting. Hopefully, we'll figure it out over the next couple games.

we are good but I expect a few conference losses to be coming around the corner, so, I won't be surprised. We will be great in March!

This team IS good. If you pay any attention to college basketball, many teams are having the same struggles. Highly respected coaches, with talented teams having the same struggles.

I'd love to have a blow out every conference game, but it's just not going to happen. We're gonna get every teams best game.

I would challenge the notion that we "play down" to competition. The competition plays up to us. In our conference, we are everyone's Super Bowl. It's not fun, but it's a fact.
