I have heard here on this board Burno is a good (great!) recruiter. Really? I ain't seeing it! Maybe if he could hang on to the players he had - Crump, Thornton, and Cochran all playing now on other MAC teams. What is the advantage of going from one MAC team to another? Better education? My bet is better coaching; as in they weren't happy with Burno.

They have been coached 10-15 years and could care less about more. They want minutes.

GO HUSKIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hunter went to Miami Ohio and is currently playing like a first team all MAC guy. I don’t blame Burno because guys transferred. Thorton went to Akron and at the NIU vs Akron game his mom was yelling it’s personal with NIU. She yelled Burno didn’t want him. Burno and coaches in general cannot usually control if kids transfer or not. There is basically no chance NIU goes to ncaa tournament this year but a very high percentage that Akron does so that’s why you transfer there. Cochran and Toledo the same thing

Agree with the confidence. Need to win the Western Michigan game Tuesday to try to stay in the mix for a MAC tourney spot.

Something happened with the Monmouth collapse, since it wasn’t televised don’t have an idea of how bad and demoralizing that was. Team hasn’t looked the same since. Need a player to step up and lead them out of this.

Why would we win at W. Michigan! They are 2-0 in MAC play. We got Ball St. on 2/20 for our first MAC win!
I'm wouldn't be confident in Burno coaching a high school team.
An interesting note - we started off 5-1. We are now 6-8. The math says we are 1-7 in our last 8 games.

Actually, you give the Huskies too much credit, as the one win you speak of was Calumet College.

I will stick with "it's personal". It is the COACH.

We really need to develop into a basketball school since college football has become whatever it is. Or maybe really dive into becoming a Golf or Soccer school since we found recent success there. Got to play where the buck goes the furthest.

He started the game and played 7 minutes. I don't recall seeing him in the 2nd half or in the back half of the first half. Maybe even Burno gets disgusted with no points, 3 shots, 2 turnovers and 1 foul. Maybe the only player I've seen who regresses - gets worse each year. Went from 43% FG to 39% to 21% over his 3 year career at NIU. His 3pt shooting has gone from 37% to 33% to 14%. His turnover rate has significantly increased.
How does that happen?

I'm with ya.

He went from an energy guy who showed a fearless streak to a guy who I 100% do not trust with the ball in his hand.

Burno didn't recruit any of those guys.

The only guy worth a darn that Burno recruited is Darweshi Hunter who transferred as a grad transfer this year after having the 1st really good season he'd ever had. And he's seemed to have continued that success. Granted, had it not been for covid, Hunter would be out of eligibility this year.

Hunter is averaging a tick below 14 points a game.

I hope that's not a shoe-in for 1st Team All-MAC.

I literally could not give a sh!t about what Kaleb's mom thinks.

Btw, in two years with Burno, poor baby Kaleb started 43 games out of 59 games played. At Akron, he's played in 14 games and started exactly 1 time.

And guess what... with a healthy roster, he wouldn't be starting at NIU this year either. He's not that good but I'm sure Momma Thornton will blame his coaches when he's not in the NBA next year.

Yes Thorton is a back up! He definitely would be playing about 20 mins a game for NIU. If I’m his mom I’m glad he’s at Akron and not NIU!

I mean...he's playing 17 minutes a game at Akron...

Ultimately though, nothing his mom says means anything at all. Burno didn't recruit her little man and I'm sure he hears all about a lack of respect and how unfair it is and how amazing Montgomery is and how every decision he makes is the right decision.

Whatever. He's a bench player playing bench minutes averaging 4 points a game. If he's so valued at Akron, why isn't he doing better?

And, not for nothing but...he'd be starting at NIU right now with the way our roster is depleted.

Edit: One more point about Thornton...

20-21: Under Montgomery, Thornton played in 17 games, started 3, played 24.5 minutes and averaged 5.4 points
21-22: Under Burno, Thornton played in 29 games, started 26, played 29 minutes a game and averaged 8.1 points.
22-23: Under Burno, Thornton played in 30 games, started 17, played 29 minutes a game and averaged 8.8 points.
23-24: At Akron, Thornton has played in 14 games, started 1, played 17.8 minutes a game and is averaging 4.1 points.

I'm glad his momma is happy with all of the respect he's getting at Akron.

What does it matter who recruited a kid? Thorton was on NIU last year right? I’m sure Burno treated Thorton no differently than anyone else on last years team. Who would he be starting for on NIU?

Zion Russell.

As for your other questions. Players are often (irrationally) partial to the coach who recruited them and often can feel as not being one of the new coach's guys since that coach is recruiting in new talent and doesn't have the same attachment to someone he inherited.

I'm not saying that is how it worked out with Thornton, but what actually happens and how an individual internalizes themselves, their role, their value, their value utilization, etc and two different things.

So, you tell me. Why would his mom scream out at the game that Burno didn't want her son on the team? Burno seemed to play the sh!t out of him and started him a lot (a majority of the games he played in). So, evidence says, Burno wanted him and played him, yet KBs moms insists Burno didn't want him.

Who is the one to trust here?

Personally, I think she's full of crap. (And I'm taking you at your word she did this because I'm pretty sure you go to every game.)
