Both on crutches,
Return ? Maybe Feb not before
Rico meniscus knee
Hornbeck stress fracture in foot from Clev state game.
He has tried to tough it out. Now out.

Hopefully we can secure a tournament berth and get hot in CLE.

If you're talking Feb 1-5, if the team is .500 or better, bring them back. If you're talking Feb 15-20, no matter what, just prep for next year and go for medical redshirts for both of them.

Can you do a medical redshirt this late into the season? This is pretty bad news. Payton is going to need to become even more of a force on the glass. If he's not getting 10+ rebounds a game we're probably going to be struggling on the glass. He may need to shy away from contesting some shots when he's helping as well so he can stay in position to rebound. Which means our perimeter defense will need to improve significantly. Honestly hard to see a path to this collection of players being very good without our centers. Unless they're going to pull Hunter's redshirt now's probably the time to find out if Entenmann can actually play a role.

Hunter is not a banger at all (nobody left on the roster is except VCD and maybe Entenmann) so pulling his redshirt just because he's tall does nothing ...

Kent's got the bodies on the bench for better perimeter defense but no proven scorers in the bunch other than Bass, and he's underperformed.

As for medical redshirts, I think 10 games is the cutoff, both have been in 11, but Ricco has played sparingly and 'Beaks injury goes back to the CSU game. Solid grounds to petition for a NCAA medical, but no guarantee to get them.

I say what's the use of playing either of them after Feb. 15. Can't be more than 5-6 games left plus MAC Tourney. Personally rather roll the dice for an extra season over less than 10 games.

But that's just me.

Seems you probably know more about Hunter's game than I do... But he's 6'8" and figures to be a 4 for us. We currently have only one player active averaging more than 7.1 rebounds per 40 minutes and only one active player averaging over 0.8 blocks per 40 minutes. If he couldn't get 7.1 r/40 and 0.8 b/40 he's probably not ready to be a D1 4. If he can he'd literally be our best active rebounder and shot blocker not named Payton.

For some perspective last year's team had 3 rotation players over 7.1 r/40 (and 3 more that were in and out of the rotation). They had 4 rotation players over 0.8 b/40. So we're not talking about monster numbers. We're talking about numbers that most D1 bigs get.

You're actually making my case for me. If Hunter was that type of player, he would be active already. I followed his recruiting for three years and he always projected himself as a SF.

Yes, he's tall enough, but he is not a banger by any means. VCD had the same recruiting profile, but was also a very good prep rebounder. That's why, at Kent, he plays the 4/3. Right now, Hunter isn't that kind of player. Down the road, maybe.

Those stats were excluding Hornbeak and Gillespie. They're both over 10 r/40. So I think it's not making your point. At the beginning of the season the decision to redshirt Hunter was made easier by the fact that we had 3 strong rebounders. 12.9/40 for Payton, 10.9/40 for Gillespie, and 10.5/40 for Hornbeak. Now we're down to #2 being VCD at 7.1/40. My point is there's a huge rebounding void that didn't exist when the decision to redshirt Hunter happened. So the calculation could change. I'm not saying he's going to come in and equal their numbers.
