More on the situation. Article mentions Cazenovia as another upstate college that closed just last year. That Syracuse is really taking a beating. Albany and Buffalo have also lost private colleges in recent years.

Yep. That's two Finger Lakes region NY schools that have closed in the last few years.

Wells have had a shrinking enrollment even before beginning of covid so this isn't really a surprise to see them closing after 156 years. They were down to 335 students back in 2021.

Wells were part of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference most recently in Division III. Previously they were part of the United East Conference.

Many college closures have been documented here on this site. Little is reported after they are gone.

Here’s an update from Iowa Wesleyan, which closed just a year ago. The local school district has purchased a large bulk of the main campus, including the gym and a large chapel/auditorium/performing arts center.

The district estimates it would have cost them close to $50 million to built. They paid a little over $ million.

Cazenovia, or at least parts of it, are housing a New York State Police Academy training facility.

That has been done in other states as well. Marymount College in Kansas became a home to the Kansas State Highway Patrol. It closed in the late 1980’s.

I think the state could convert these colleges into special needs schools. You don't have many schools that serves the disabled. There is two that I know of. The one in DC called Gallaudet and the new one in Florida called Beacon which got regional accreditation which I could see can join NAIA in the future.

A friend of mine studied at Gallaudet. Both of his parents were deaf, and he learned signing growing up, but he could not become a signer in high schools for deaf students without getting his degree. He worked in Pittsburgh high schools for many years but is retired now. You're right; there is likely a need for additional special needs schools. He didn't have many options at the time.

I doubt we’ll see any new public schools with this sort of specialization.

The trend has long been to accomodate and mainstream people as much as we can.

There could be another private school for the rich pop up though.

College will remain open on a refocused model. Athletics will continue at the school.

They will be offering 8 majors, greatly pared down from around 25, with an additional 15 minors or concentrations. Around 40 programs for 550 students was too much. They may lose a few students in less popular majors, but will definitely be a leaner organization.

They will now offer the following majors-

natural resources
business
education (emphasis options in teacher education, outdoor education, and environmental education)
Biology (chemistry minor)
psychology and social sciences
Earth studies (emphasis options in water science, geology, and climate Science)
environmental humanities
sustainable community development

In general, most areas they offer now are still covered, but perhaps in a slightly less focused way at times. But I would say for undergraduate programs, it’s preferable not to be hyper focused on a very specific area, to the exclusion of some additional courses in adjacent areas.

They are also adding mens and women’s wrestling for 2025.

It's gotta be tough to stop a death spiral, like if you're a current HS Junior/Senior, how much faith do you have that Northland will still be operational in 5 years?

Credit to them for trying something a little different, it's probably their best shot at survival, and I hope it works out for them.
