As an instructor of one student on that list, I can tell you he was absolutely legit. In my experience, many athletes take education very seriously. Many don't. This isn't terribly different than the whole of the student population.

Sure I believe some individuals are legit. First my comment was more about the fact we were last among MAC teams than discrediting our guys on the list. Second, I keep seeing all the tweets about academics breaking all time records. First time every program was over 3.0. Highest cumulative Football GPA for a semester ever, etc. and I can't help but thinking yeah effing right. Heck think about that. Tied for last in the MAC in all-academic football players... but the highest football GPA ever... Right. At the time where it feels like the academic side of athletics are deprioritized more than ever... we're breaking all the academic records... Yeah, sure.

I don’t know if the data are legitimate or not but I do know I’m tired of hearing about it. They use it to disguise how their athletic team performance is declining but who cares they get A’s in history. Helps with the AD’s bonus at the end of the year also. I can see %getting their degree as a goal but GPA seems gimmicky and easy to manipulate with course selection, load etc. Especially when it’s an average of hundreds of students.

The real question is when do we play Akron and which one of us is going with a sign that says "The only thing Akron can dodge is a debt collector."

Somewhat true. There are definitely easy majors and harder majors and grade inflation is a real thing. Another big thing is that the state of Ohio funds differently based on grades so there is a large financial incentive to pass students as well.

How long has "grade inflation" been going on? There was talk of that when I was still an undergrad in the late 1960s!
