UH gave Dana 5 years, and given the need for instant gratification in the college game, that was more than reasonable. Houston would be wise to avoid the shiny object temptation and take the time to pick the guy who wants to coach at Houston and have long term success there. Picking the guy who comes in looking for his next job would be a mistake.

Nope. We wasted 7 years with safe picks. We’ve tried the safe route twice with Applewhite and Dana and failed spectacularly
The guy looking for HC job at Bama, Texas or Ohio State is exactly what Houston needs. A hard nosed ambitious SOB that wants to win immediately and win big.
That means a couple of big12 championship and a playoff spot or two.
Thats how we built the stadium, the shiny indoor practice facility and are now breaking ground on a state of the are football operations building.
Because of successes Briles, Sumlin, and Herman had here

His buyout goes down a bit if he finds another coaching gig. but of those names listed my favorites would be jeff and willie fritz. both have success and recuit the same area so they would be able to slide right in. kliff would be a hard no and if he were to get the job somehow id be afraid it would be no better than just having holgs at the wheel.
Houston's success at the gates has been with offensive-minded head coaches. Think Yoeman and Briles. UH will be a perfect fit for Traylor. They have the facilities and are in the hottest recruiting area in the country. Fritz is a strong candidate but Houston fans may not like his offense.
BTW, another former UH HC was fired today - Dana Dimel.

And they all left to go somewhere else. Go get a Sampson type, who’s good at his craft, and happy with his compensation and coaching at UH.
He’s out there. You just gotta find him.
FWIW, Traylor has passed on a couple of opportunities waiting for Texas to open up again. He’d leave Houston in a heartbeat and feel nothing.

Fritz or Traylor are probably the best two picks. Patterson has great pedigree and I'll admit to be being intrigued---but Im just not sure he still has the fire necessary to be successful in the workaholic world of upper tier college coaches. That said, I think the odds on favorite is Patterson because he has no buy out attached to his hiring.
As far as Im concerned, a new coach is my favorite Christmas present this year. Any guy being discussed is a massive upgrade over the clown show Dana ran here. Thank you to the UH administration and donors that made that possible to dump Dana!

Since Yeoman, our best coaches have been the ones who used UH as a stepping stone, so if the product on the field is good let them keep stepping on up.
That being said, my personal favorite candidate mentioned so far is Fritz. He has won everywhere he has coached. If it wouldn't have been for the hurricanes, he would have turned Tulane around quicker.
After him I would prefer a top coordinator from a top program.
I've mentioned this before on the boards, but I currently live in San Antonio and have followed UTSA and Traylor. I think he would be a home run for UH, but I'm not sure he's as open to making the move as some think.
Traylor had the opportunity to make the move to Texas Tech a couple of years ago and said no, then signed an extension with UTSA. He really does love the school and the city so it would take a really big job (like A&M) for him to consider leaving. I honestly get strong Gary Patterson vibes from him in that he is looking to be THE guy at his school long term.
Could be wrong and he could announce his departure tomorrow, but I don't think he makes the move for Houston, Baylor, etc. UTSA is currently scrambling to increase the overall football budget in an effort to keep him, so he may be letting his name get thrown out there to leverage more resources from the school.
Also, feel like we need to see him coach without Frank Harris to judge just how good he is. It helps your success when you have one of the best QB's in the G5.
I remember telling Houston fans that Dana was undisciplined, a horrible recruiter, and an average coach at best. I got hit back with, “you just mad we stole your coach!.”
LOLOL
.
PS: Neal Brown just went 8-4 (6-3) in the Big 12… if y’all wanna “steal” another one.

Some of us listened and expressed concerns but were told it was just sour grapes. I think in hindsight most of our fans just wanted to believe we stole a coach from a P5 program. Dana was an ego hire and we paid dearly for it.
Given UH's lack of fan support, I think it's going to be difficult to attract and retain a top-tier coach, despite the money. No coach wants to play in an empty stadium year after year.

In the current college landscape, ego hires fail as often as the work out.

it's not that hard to fix. Offer the kids extra credit for attending games, and/or offer free campus parking for the Fall semester with every student football ticket purchased.
That should at least double the sales and attendance.

Cool... Attendance smack.
Had no attendance issues with Herman. And it will be like that again. Soon. Front running city.

Id actually be fine with Herman. I think his style of coaching has proven to be very successful with the kind of recruits the school tends to attract---but he burned more than a few bridges on the way out---so I dont know if the administration would be all that keen on Herman Era 2.0

UH hired Briles, Sumlin, and Herman when we had less fans, support, prestige, money, etc. No reason to think we won’t be able to bring in a quality coach.
