Let’s say conference realignment forced the series to go on a hiatus, which school gets hurt more?

I don’t think it would hurt FSU as much if they ended the season with UM and both FSU and UM were able to play USF and UCF on the regular. I think UF pigeon holed themselves into a regional team and is quickly getting lost in the shuffle of a deep SEC conference dominated by Alabama and now UGA.

So yes, I’d entertain the thought of discontinuing the series.

I thought FSU was going to the SEC. If so, how could that series be discontinued?

But ... if we're taking conference realignment off the table ...

I don't know that either gets hurt really badly. Voluntarily giving up the rivalry isn't good for the sport. And that matchup has been historically relevant.

Since Florida isn't as strong as FSU now, I'd say they'd be hurt a little more than the Noles. But FSU isn't too far removed from being average or slightly below average either. So this is splitting hairs.

I think UF is getting in danger of being irrelevant, the FSU vs UF game reminds people they still exist, UCF is in their backyard competing for recruits, USF is a promotion away from putting the squeeze on them more. With OU and UT joining the party, divisions are going away and so is yearly freebies against Vanderbilt.

Florida football situation is similar to Louisville's basketball situation. The next hire has got to be a home run. If the next hire is just ho-hum both programs risk becoming Miami football or Indiana basketball.

Miami is actually a good program and Recent years was the go to area team to watch but the last 2 years the base has a Miami problem. The Problem are the Dolphins have finally awoke from the dead and is taking all the Mojo from the base. Stadium was 1/3 rd full when We played there last weekend and Sunday for the Raiders a near full house but that make Mario look like the fans have turned on Him. That reminds Me ,I need to put on My Dolphin Hat or Jersey to keep the drive alive

FSU. One of the unstated goals of the end-of-season "rivalry" game is to appeal to donors. I don't believe UM/FSU would generate nearly as much buzz among donors as UF/FSU. At least not for many years.

I also think dropping the UF game would hurt recruiting.

UF could move the Georgia game to the end of the season. That would likely generate more buzz as the rivalry game. It would also hurt GT by taking away their rivalry game.

Good point actually. If the Gators scheduled an easy OOC win to replace FSU, the win wouid just about guarantee a bowl appearance for the Gators even in down years. The best thing to do is just keep on beating their tail and let them keep wasting money on underperforming coaches.

Agreed. Florida vs Georgia is almost as big. Tennessee isn't far behind, and Gainesville will have a continued wide array of top schools coming in to play which will include Texas and Oklahoma. FSU knows this and that is why they want out.

If further consolidation transpires, and that is likely, whether they play Florida or not will be the least of their worries. Florida is in what will likely be one of the Super 2. FSU isn't. I have doubts as to how serious the Clemson administration is over ever leaving the ACC. The ACC would have to implode and key schools go with them before that move is as likely as Florida State wanting into either the SEC or Big 10. And that desire that FSU has expressed answers the question of the OP in indelible ink.
