Happy for the Seniors on Senior night

the good....
-Samson is a Beast
-We figured out how to use a TE
-we play Buffalo for bowl eligibility

The bad....
-we still lack ability to consistently drive offensively

It all comes down to our ability to create a gameplan that allows us to somehow score with our capabilities

Steve here's what I find alarming. Last year we made adjustments to both the defensive schemes and offensive schemes and we made HUGE strides the last 4 or 5 games. I'm shocked at the sieve our defense has become. Look at our defense up until and including the NIU game. Then look at WMU, Toledo and Akron? WTF happened? Injuries? Lack of effective defensive schemes? I've been all over the offense this season but Needham needs to do some soul searching and this unit needs to improve next year even without our two LBs. Yes its GAME 10 and we're still giving away games with stupid penalities. That to me is all on the head coach and coaching staff. Yes I'm happy with a win (did you see the Toledo Bowling Green score) and we might win at Buffalo and go to a bowl game all which I hope happens but no sadly this is NOT a good football team and has a HUGE amount of improvements to make for next season.

Rob called out the O line about last night. Another area needing improvement next season.

Not only playing for a bowl game, which is a wonderful reward for the players at this level, we are playing for a WINNING record! A hugely disappointing season can actually end with a winning record. In the bad old days, having a winning record was cause for celebration because they were so rare, nowadays it can feel like no big deal. This team plays with a ton of heart. The culture of the program has never been better.

RE: Game Week Akron at EMU November 14 2023
From a football standpoint that was a frustrating game to watch, and frankly we probably should have lost. I thought the defense was oddly awful for only giving up 17 points in regulation. Akron was 13-20 on 3rd/4th down conversions...give me a break, and it's not like they had a ton of 3rd and 1 or 2, we were giving up 3rd and 8 or more. I really thought the 3rd and 15 late in the 4th quarter was going to be the end of us. Also, how many times are you going to just give them that little short drag route which they easily turn into 8-12 yards every time? Needed to switch to a zone or something to cover the middle of the field because it cost us all game!

On offense...more the same. The last drive of regulation and then OT showed...why aren't we running the ball more? I've heard rumblings that Evans may be hurt or something, but I go back to the first drive of the NIU game and then the end of last night, they knew we were running and couldn't do anything. The O-line dominated the line of scrimmage and Samson couldn't be stopped. Throughout the game I thought there were multiple drop backs where I thought the O-line did a great job of give Smith time...and he did nothing with it. Now, watching on TV it's hard to tell who's fault that was. Austin would bounce around back there for nearly five seconds it seemed and I assume no one was open! If that was the case I think it speaks to the fact that we need shorter routes which allow Austin to get the ball our quick. If that isn't the case our WR just need to do a better job of getting open or coming back to the ball for their QB.

From an emotional side of things, you always want the seniors to go out with a win on senior night so that is great to see! Moreover, while a blowout would have been great, in some ways a game like that will be much more memorable for those guys as they think back on their senior night years from now.

It was ugly, it was frustrating, but hey it was a win! Hopefully Miami-OH beats Buffalo tonight (effectively ending their postseason hopes) and they just kind of pack it in for next week and we're able to get back to a bowl game.

You mean for a .500 record, winning would be over .500.

No, he means winning record. They would obviously need to win next week to get to 6-6 which would then get them a bowl game which they could win and finish 7-6.

No. I mean ALSO winning the bowl game, 7-6.

RE: Game Week Akron at EMU November 14 2023
Another thought I had about the game...I wish we were more aggressive in elements of the offense. For example, we had just gotten a big three and out to start the second half and having a decent drive. We get stopped, it's 4th and 9 from their 38 at yard line. I know Jesus is a good kick, but they put him out there to try a 58 yarder?! It's not like we were having trouble stopping their offense...I would have liked to see them go for it from that spot on the field. Worst case you don't convert you give them the ball at their 38, which we did anyway because what are the odds you're going to make a 58 yard kick, and what do you know...they punt the ball right back to us a few minutes later.

79, I completely agree. The penalties this year have been a nuisance and shows a lack of focus/control. You are correct that we showed massive improvement when we switched defensive scheme after gave up a 50 burger at home to Buffalo. I dont know why we couldnt do the same for the offense this year when you realize the QB that the coaches decided on is in a scheme that doesnt work for the team. I look at what NIU does with Rocky as their QB. They realize he isnt the best pocket QB but they put him in winning situations and he excels. My biggest frustration is that a 10th year head coach should be able to modify a system and he simply hasnt this year.

Im happy with the win and do hope we beat Buffalo who should likely lose tonight vs Miami putting them at 3-8 on the season when they suit up against us.

I think this off-season, CC will be put to the test more than he ever has. He has to find LB's to fill the massive shoes of Joe and Chase, has to find a QB, has to find an Offensive Coordinator who can scheme. Losing the LB's, a couple good O-linemen, a weapon in Hamze and Tanner will hurt us tremendously.

There is a whiner on this board that constantly points out Creighton's poor record in close games and especially in overtime. He attributes that to the coach's vanilla strategy of playing "not to lose" rather than being aggressive and securing the win. That "whiner" is me.

The announcers, myself and I am sure Akron were ALL expecting to see Samson Evans try to bully the ball across the goal line. Instead, we throw the ball to our "blocking" tight end? I'm done whining.

From a pure coaching standpoint, you make a solid point Dan.

That acknowledged, a college coach has the duty as well as the power to assemble his roster. Creighton gets to as Bill Purcell used to say "cook the meal and select the groceries" as well. Our less than stellar offense this year mostly suffered clearly from the root cause of lack of talent. That problem lands clearly at the foot of the coach.

By the way, I have enjoyed this thread very much. "79, Steve 4840, SD and KPJ, you guys are always fun to read. Thanks.

Appreciate that Jerry. Your posts are great to read as well. I agree that CC has the ability to select the offensive groceries for this upcoming season and he better have a big cart. He has lot to replace and given his post-game media speeches, I think he knows he has a lot of work to do.

Random thought.....I usually tailgate 1 home game a season and would love to have a beer with you guys at a tailgate next season. Would anyone else be interested?

Buffalo lost last night which ends any of their postseason hopes, lets hope that deflates them enough to just kind of mail it in on Tuesday.

Going into the last week of the season the MAC will have four bowl eligible teams, five eliminated, and three (EMU, CMU, NIU) needed a win to get in.

I'm putting the O/U at 5.5 bowl teams. What are you taking? The games are:

EMU @ Buffalo
NIU @ Kent State
Toledo @ CMU

I'll take the over!
