Absolutely. It's like we're watching college basketball and not a pretend pro team.

Nobody saw it coming! Except a few of us. 04-cheers

Sam, I still think Lovejoy will have the best collegiate career of anyone from last or this year's team. He is an absolute stud, in my opinion.

Then again, I predicted Colin Golson would be All-MAC before he ended his career. My future as a recruiting analyst is indeed suspect.

Yes. Really like that Tycuff took over when things got tight. That's what leaders do.

It was an impressive surge right when the team needed it during a game he was not otherwise shooting well in. Tgat was an amazing show of leadership by TyCuff!

(11-11-2023 02:05 PM)TheWoodenNickle Wrote:  Ellerbe had a nice game with 6 boards and 3 assists. Can always use a player that does that.

Ellerbe is indeed very intriguing. Had 4 assists the game before too. He is very fast, athletic, and good court vision (and maybe physically strong too?). But he is either not confident in his shot, or he does not have a shot. Regardless, he was a very beneficial pickup.

(11-11-2023 02:05 PM)TheWoodenNickle Wrote:  Martynov will improve but needs to stop with the 1-handed free throws. It's only cool if the shots go in.

Coach Heath answered that in the post game interview. Coach Simon attended a seminar in teaching shooting technique-> in that seminar he learned that some players overuse their left/off hand too much when shooting free throws which generates a non beneficial spin on the ball-> Martynov was identified to have that problem-> so for now he is being coached to use only one hand-> over time the offhand will be gradually reintroduced-> and the hope is the offhand will no longer dominate the shot once it is used again

Sam, you should try posting when you're sober. You've been down this same path the past two years and it doesn't end well. You look like the non expert you are.

Although I agree with you it will be interesting to see what happens when Lovejoy returns.

79, you should try posting when you don’t have the stick up your ass. You actually post insightful things when you aren’t trying to be the regulator of fun. People are happy that we won a game for a change. Maybe relax and smile instead of yelling “get off my lawn” all the time.

You guys are both two of my favorite posters on the board. Sam and I tend to be aligned on most things, and I appreciate the info 79 brings to the board.

I think we have reasons to be optimistic. And I think there is reason to believe that this team will easily surpass last year’s version.

If you are familiar with the game of basketball, this was easy to predict, despite the apparent decrease in talent.

Most people on this board believed we would be worse this year.

Are we supposed to forget that we lost by 39 points to an average (at best) Butler team?

Point taken Bob. Are we sure, however, that in the age of the portal, Butler is average? They are a P6 program playing at home, and I do remember the hubris we all felt when we when came close to beating perennial power U-M last year. Blue did indeed turn out to be indeed average at best.

Of course, this team has be better than last year. Last season can be summed up in two words, EPIC FAILURE! To find a similar performance, you would have to go back to Charles Ramsey or Jim Boone eras.

Sam, Cow and '79 are all intelligent and thoughtful contributors and I enjoy their posts a ton.

*Edit. The football team played Georgia Southern in a bowl game in 2018, I was thinking they were Georgia State.

Glad you do and we can disagree on that. However, it doesn't change the fact that the team has played 2 games so far and got a 10 point win at home over a school, quite frankly I had to look up to see what conference they play in because I have never heard of Georgia Southern and we lost by 39 to a team that no one is predicting to be very good this season. It is literally impossible to know if this team is better than last year's team. I personally don't see how losing an NBA player and Noah Farrakhan makes you better but we shall see. It is why we play the games.

We literally played Georgia Southern in a bowl game 5 years ago. I find it very hard to believe that you haven’t heard of them.

Fair point. I was going to do an edit on that. I wasn't sure if they were Georgia State or Georgia Southern in that bowl game. The point is, I'm an avid college basketball fan and I love mid major conferences and Georgia Southern is a school I can never remember seeing on the hardwood.

The bigger question is what kind of a basketball history do they have?

Sam and KPJ hit that "nail on the head". One of the most heartbreaking losses in the Creighton era.

Heartbreaking? Definitely
Emblematic? Probably
Love my Eagles, but… we’ve been “this close” a lot since 2016.

You are raising some valid points losing Noah and Bates. But I think there might be a couple things going on:
1) This years recruiting class was way better then we were expecting. Makes us possibly deeper AND more experienced than last year.
2) It seems that Coach Heath scrapped the “pro style” coaching scheme.

About the 39 point loss, I don’t think Butler is going to be bad. They have only played mid majors so far, but are killing them. Schedule linked below- at half time they were up 34 points against SE Missouri St, and up 25 points on East Tennesse St, yet only up 8 points at half time against EMU. All 3 teams were going to lose to Butler, but EMU lasted the longest. It is concerning of course that it fell apart so much and so fast in the second half.

Good points Ramy. I just chafe when we get a declaration of "We are waaay better than last year's team" after exactly 2 games, one of which was a 39 point loss! It is nothing more than a thinly veiled jab at their beloved scapegoat, a very passive aggressive way to root for a team.

RE: MBB Gameday: Georgia Southern
I mean, anyone with eyes can see that the all-around defensive effort and intensity on the glass are already significantly better than last year. We gave up 60 points and had 39 rebounds against Georgia Southern. Last year, we averaged 31 rebounds a game and didn’t give up 60 points or less until our 15th game of the season (against lowly CMU). Those are the things you HAVE to be good at when you don’t have a team full of explosive offensive players. So far, so good in that regard.

I agree that it’s early, and a lot can change, but that one game was better than any I remember watching last year.

Sam,

Good post on the rebounding stats. Definitely some improvement.

When we were MAC Champions virtually all of the players sometimes even Boykins found a man to block out on the shot. Of course Boykins, Dial and Tolbert would leak out on the fast break depending on their position on the floor.

Bottom line is that I’ll be watching to see if this team blocks out or do they ole their man to get offensive rebounds. This alone would be a huge improvement from last season!!
