Has UNA considered applying to the CAA??
This post led me to think about that:

I don’t know why you don’t spend more time talking about what UMass needs to do in order to be successful - rather than trying to drag Delaware along as your partner. Do you really think UMass has made a wise move, years later? Your fan support is below FCS/CAA days. You have no rivals, you have no conference. You have a program that is viewed as a punching bag. Yet you continue trying to convince others to join you. Almost seems cruel.

Delaware is interested in this move regardless of what is being posted here. I think watching JMU move up has been a motivating factor.

UMass is playing their chief rival Thanksgiving weekend, is that not what college football is all about? I think it would be great to see Delaware reconnect with Temple, UMass, JMU, and some other former FCS powers like App State and GaSouthern. Had W&M not been sabotaged back in the late 70’s, they’d be in the AAC I’d guess.

Whatever, W&M today outdraws UMass and we have a winning program so I’m not sure we’re the one who have made the wrong decision.

As far as Delaware, there are a core of maybe 30 posters who want to be FBS - not sure the University has signaled anything but studying options. Like everyone else. Strange that you don’t have an onslaught of Delaware supporters even commenting on this thread / if they’re that interested.

Still, UMass is failing badly at this FBS game and no one ever seems to want to either acknowledge or address it. Instead, repeating past failures (joining the MAC) or trying to drag someone else along (like Delaware) are all that seems to be mentioned. It’s a shame.

Yes, UDel is studying their options. A university doesn’t do that unless there is interest amongst the administration. Posters on message boards don’t control anything, as I’m sure you know.

As for UMass, they’re not following the path that has proven successful for transition, and I think that’s what people here are saying. They need to join an all-sports conference. They aren’t Notre Dame and they’re not an academy.

I follow the A10 more than any conference outside the ACC, and UMass sticks out like a sore thumb. FBS/A10 is ridiculous at this point and I hope they join another conference so perhaps W&M is offered A10 membership because GW, UR, and Davidson would all provide a solid core of opponents vs the crappy CAA. Yes, I follow W&M believe it or not. It seems you want UDel to stick around for personal reasons, but it seems like they are looking at what the CAA has become and want out.

Actually I like the CAA, don’t believe it’s crappy and I think Delaware is a core component of the league. That pretty much wraps up my position. It’s top tier FCS football, solid mid major in basketball and nationally competitive in baseball and lacrosse. If you’re on the east coast, not in the ACC and want a competitive all sports home, there’s no better option.

From a W&M perspective, it’s a home for all sports, the geography makes sense (we have 7 members within a 4 hour drive from Williamsburg) and we can both compete and win within the conference. Like any conference, there are some members where the rivalry and interest are higher than others but I have no problem with the recent additions. Like Elon ten years ago, I think the new members are universities on the upswing (like Campbell) and the interest will grow.

RE: Has UNA considered applying to the CAA??
No. Mainly because of geography. UNA isn’t close to any of the CAA schools even the ones in the Carolinas (former Big South schools).

Currently, UNA has five ASUN schools within 350 miles of Florence. The closest CAA school is over 500 miles.

Nope, the only other FCS conference UNA would consider is the SoCon...

And depending on what happens the next couple of years, may not even consider the SoCon...

Absolutely No, unless the University could afford to Charter Fly every sport to every event.

Why would we want the Southland?

Why do you want the SoCon??? SoCon's football strength is pretty eeak. Their forte is badketball, IMO, not UNA's strong point.

Then you really don't pay attention to other conference members...

UNA is traditionally a strong basketball school and football, the transition has been tough, but every year we have gotten better and better. Even played in the conference championship a couple years ago...

If the Southland still had the schools that moved to the WAC, then maybe, but not a chance now.
