12. Alejandro Vasquez – UAB Blazers
2022-23 season stats (Salt Lake): 18.4 ppg and 2.9 apg

The 6’4 guard played two years at St. Bonaventure before becoming a JUCO All-American at Salt Lake. He had 14 games of at least 20 points, including a season-high 31-point effort versus Colorado Northwestern. Vasquez joins a UAB squad that lost a ton of talent, including 20+ ppg scoring guard, Jordan Walker. They’ll need him to be an impact scorer to compete in the AAC this season.

8. Chris Coleman – UAB Blazers
2022-23 season stats (South Plains): 16.0 ppg and 8.0 rpg

The 6’9 forward was in double figures in all but two games for the JUCO powerhouse last season. He went for 30 points and 10 rebounds against New Mexico Junior College, along with 25 versus Adams State JV. Outside of forward Javian Davis, the rest of the frontcourt is gone for the Blazers. Depending on how UNC transfer Will Shaver looks at his new spot, Coleman could/should have a large role in the rotation as well.

4BLAZERS

Andy Kennedy’s UAB Blazers grew to be one of the best teams in Conference USA, reaching the NIT title game a year ago. As the coach begins his fourth season in a new conference, UAB’s depth should keep the Blazers in an elevated territory.

UAB’s ascendance was spurred largely by two players: Jordan “Jelly” Walker and Trey Jamison. Both players’ importance and skill can’t be understated and they each have a chance to latch on to an NBA roster, something a Blazer hasn’t done since Elijah Millsap.

Still, UAB is deep, especially after bringing in numerous transfers. Most of the team’s primary rotation will consist of upperclassmen, giving the team an experience advantage over many of its conference opponents.

Guard Eric Gaines is one of the conference’s best players, exemplified by his selection for the preseason All-AAC First Team. The former LSU guard averaged 11.5 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game last year, flirting with the NBA Draft before deciding to return.

We are going to be a very slept on team this season purely for the fact that we lost 80% of our team. I think we got better overall, but the issue will be overcoming the issue last year. We have the get the chemistry down early. There was a clear aha moment last season about half way through where we started wining games and dominating. With an increase in difficulty of opponent that moment needs to happen in the first 8 games or so

Agree. When Jelly got hurt, the team had to recreate itself.
