Defending the goal by "Parking the bus" in front of the goalie is no fun and will not result in little to no scoring. It's why Americans are turned off by the sport, IMO.

The last thing any sport on the face of the earth should do is modify itself to appeal to ignorant Americans.
You don't have to worry about this one. The world will not be taking any soccer advice from Americans anytime in the next million years.

Well, I would hope America would become a (men's) soccer power over the next 50 years. At least then we would maybe have a voice?

Charm City -- As a soccer purist, do you think removing a number of players, let's say 2-3, from both teams would change the game that much?

I think you know the answer to this question. Do you think removing 2-3 players from a football team’s starting 11 or a baseball team’s 9 would drastically change the game?

I don’t think the world’s most popular sport is going to completely change how the game is played to satisfy some Americans wanting to see more scoring.

RE: WMU Men's Soccer
MD- you alway have great insights on topics but you are way off on this one.

What do you think leaving 2 people off the baseball field to increase scoring would do to the game?

Americans are slowly catching on to the nuances of soccer. No need to dramatically change the world’s most popular sport.

RE: WMU Men's Soccer
First off, you both are taking my comment far too seriously. Nothing is going to change in the world of soccer with FIFA involved. I'm simply asking the question because I want professional opinion on it -- assuming here that Charm City played/coached the sport his entire life.

Eight man/arena football is a great example of playing with a few less players successfully with a lot more scoring opportunities. It's pretty much the same game but with more space. IMO, the same thing holds true with youth soccer -- 5v5, 6v6, 7v7 etc.

For those of you that have never played soccer, it’s pretty hard to play with less players on a full size pitch. 7v7 soccer is typically played on a smaller field and often with smaller goals. It’s asking a lot to go to a third extra time even with 10 men.

Thanks for that take as I've never played other than pick up games.

And I think I asked the wrong question. I should have asked if it would change the sport enough to the point it would ruin the sport for you and/or the players. Personally, I don't think it would for me -- but I'm not a purist.

In my opinion it would ruin the sport (more so for players) when playing a 3rd extra time with less men. It would not open up the game. It would require a slower pace as players would have to cover even more ground. Players are gassed already as is. Injuries is also in consideration.

BTW, unless I'm missing something, it appears all volleyball games in the NCAA tourney are at neutral sites, but at least the first few rounds of soccer are not.

I don't know, I think soccer needs to shift here. I'm sure it wasn't fun playing soccer in 30 degrees and snow showers for 110 minutes. Pick a few southern and west coast hosts for neutral sites.

Volleyball isn't at a neutral site. Louisville is the #2 seed. They host WMU vs Auburn & Louisville vs Wright St in the 1st Rd & Louisville vs Western in the 2nd Rd.

Gotcha. Again, thanks for the take. I felt like we had the momentum throughout the overtime and as soon as Notre Dame was able to force us in the PK, it evened things up. I just wish there was a better way than the goalie guessing if opponent was going to left, right, or center.

I was also very surprised to see the game being played in South Bend this late in the year. I swear, this would not have been possible 40 years ago as there would have been at least 6 inches to a foot of snow on the ground.
