clt says uncc doesn't exist, pal. https://www.charlotte.edu/

And the first thing you see when you open the link is UNC-Charlotte.

My freshman year they passed out bumper stickers that said "I lost my hyphen at UNC Charlotte". That was 1977. Soon the news will get down to Greenville, NC.

RE: I thought UNCC had a bunch of big $$$ boosters lined up
I lived in downtown (next to the stadium which I don’t consider “uptown”) Charlotte for 4 yrs. It is an unique, amazing place to live…but that’s because the banks said, “Make these changes or we bolt.” The majority of big $$ players don’t have a connection to Charlotte. They support the Hornets & the Panthers because they are pro teams. They barely participated in the building of the AAA stadium (one of the nicest in the country)…but they were finishing up Romare Bearden Park just before.

All that to say, I’m not sure how much the big bankers support CLT because they aren’t natives and don’t really care what happens outside of downtown. They are just worried about the quality of life downtown. Most of the people I met weren’t from NC at all…the majority, in fact, were from Russia. CLT does have some deep pocket supporters but they have the same uphill fight as UAB in being relatively young schools with the need to tap business sources on the benefits the Miners bring to the city.

Bank of America's Christine Katziff talks impact of three-decade partnership with UNC Charlotte

Truist Financial Corporation and UNC Charlotte are partnering to support student success and workforce development for the Charlotte region and beyond. Through a $5.3 million investment by the bank, the University will launch the Truist Institute for Student Success.

UNC Charlotte introduced government officials, and economic development and industry partners to two growing research areas of focus: predicting health and environmental risk and next-generation battery research during an open house on Monday, June 5.

During the Powering the Future event, guests toured North Carolina’s Battery Complexity, Autonomous Vehicle and Electrification Research Center, or BATT CAVE, and visited the Center for Computational Intelligence to Predict Health and Environmental Risks, or CIPHER.

“At UNC Charlotte, we are embracing our vision as an emerging top-tier, world-class research university,” said John Daniels, interim vice chancellor of research. “This is needed to support the industries and communities in our fast-growing region. Both CIPHER and BATT CAVE represent the innovative, interdisciplinary team-based research you’ll find only at Charlotte.”

U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis, who spoke at the event, said, “This is an exciting opportunity. We are at a convergence point and everything this University has done since I have been involved in politics is proving that the bets you all wanted us to place are returning incredible value. You’ve been good stewards of taxpayer dollars and are graduating capable people. This is just another incredible success story that we have to continue to build on.”

BATT CAVE: Meeting a Critical Need
Part of The William States Lee College of Engineering, BATT CAVE is the only university-led research center in the state focused on advancing the fast-growing field of battery technology, safety and electrification research. This research is directly applicable to vehicles, in particular electric vehicles, and all systems dependent on clean energy use.

Electric vehicle manufacturing is projected to increase 17% over the next decade, making it one of the fastest-growing industries in the United States as well as North Carolina. In 2021, the North Carolina General Assembly made an investment of more than $40 million to renovate research center facilities, purchase state-of-the-art equipment and hire additional faculty — all of which will support an expanded talent pipeline of skilled engineers prepared to meet the industry demand. With this investment and its position in the midst of the state’s EV and battery, mining, processing and manufacturing economy, UNC Charlotte continues to lead transformational energy research and talent production.

Jun Xu, an internationally recognized battery safety and modeling expert, serves as BATT CAVE’s director. Xu and his team of faculty and graduate-level students base their experiential learning and research activity at the BATT CAVE facility on UNC Charlotte’s research campus, near the Energy Production and Infrastructure Center, EPIC, an established leader in energy research.

Demonstrations during the BATT CAVE portion of the tour included an EV race car developed and fabricated by students in 49ers Racing; wireless power transfer designed for rail transportation introduced for Belmont Trolley; and PoleVolt, a universal charging solution designed for installation on street-side light poles, developed in partnership with EPIC, Duke Energy, the City of Charlotte and Centralina Regional Council.

clt says this is just a few recent examples.

We do have a matching gift from one big donor that will match up to tens of millions, but I’m not sure if a minimum threshold has to be hit to enact that or if he/she will match any amount donated.

That's where the alumni donors come in. Businesses can say all they want that they aren't going to throw dollars at a program until they are successful. Alumni can't say that. Donate first, then get good, then you'll get more dollars from the business community.

UAB & Birmingham businesses have similar programs (they have a nest for tech companies to launch w/out renting space and begging for venture capital. But we’ve always been disappointed that nothing has come from those specific cooperation programs to benefit athletics). We did, of course, win over the city leaders and largest companies by focusing on the economic benefits of a successful, visible UAB…specifically highly visible programs like athletics.

The money for the expansion is still there, a couple large individual donors. Biff was calling out the corporate community here but I guess you will run your mouth either way.

This isn't a difficult concept to grasp. Same as VA Tech. Pretty sure those diplomas say "Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University", and not VA Tech.

ECU has suffered from the same thing in Greenville NC. The lack of financial support from the community, alumni, and corporations is telling. This is why we couldn't quite get over the hump when the time was right in the late 90's prior to the BCS. We arguably had the best football program in the state with Steve Logan at the helm.

Fat cats and NC Legislature have failed Eastern NC. Just an area you pass through on the way to the beach for many west of us. The fat cats around this city are to concerned about their ticket allocations at the Dean Dome than supporting the largest beacon of reach for an entire region of the state.

I do see an opportunity with our association for both our under supported institutions. We can build upon this. I hope somehow we both can include App State in this alliance. I see opportunity if UNC and NCSU are split in the future break up of the ACC.

Keep educating and fighting!!!

Pursue Gold has reached $497M of the $500M goal. We're doing alright at present.

Not to get too off topic but the University of California Berkeley is going through similar challenges with branding. Cal, Berkeley, UC Berkeley, etc...

He clearly meant East Carolina Teachers Training School.

We started life at the Charlotte Center for the University of North Carolina, then Charlotte College, then UNC Charlotte, and hopefully one day the University of Charlotte.

True story, UNC Greensboro, UNC Wilmington, UNC Asheville or UNC Charlotte have ever had the dreaded hyphen as an official part of our name. Only UNC-Chapel Hill has it. Apparently, it's a legal technicality that allows them to use University of North Carolina in their branding, when that name actually applies to the UNC System through all 16 institutions.

Hyphen or no hyphen, what difference does it make? They've all got the "UNC" in front.
