Cessna stadium is old and ugly. So I think from that standpoint it’s positive for sure.

Wichita State is not going to get football back. Makes me wonder when some more teams leave AAC if WSU won’t be shown the door at some point.

It’s the annual site for Kansas high school state track meet (all classes). So it will be positive from that standpoint as well.

As long as Navy is here, Wichita is good.

Hypothetically, if Wichita left the American or was forced out, where might you go? Back to the MVC? Maybe the Atlantic 10 or Big East?

Who knows that’s what worries me. WSU is odd in that it’s a public without football.

The only other public without football that has good fan support and puts money into their basketball, without looking to hard, is VCU.

Not sure where WSU would fit in best.

Personally I like the AAC a lot. Just hope having no football doesn’t bite them 2030 and beyond.

Why is it a foregone conclusion to not ever have football again? Seems like being in the AAC for all other sports is the perfect incentive to consider it.

It's not, the old guard doesn't want ot back as a lot of them now cheer for the OU or K State football. If President Bardo's health hadn't taken a turn for the worse, we would have likely given football a go by now. Either way, football was never coming back to Cessna and although it sucks seeing it get torn down, it had to happen. The #1 thing that will drive the return of football is our willingness/desire/need to recruit future students from the I-35 corridor. If Rice/Tulane/SMU/Tulsa/Memphis don't get to a P5 and want to stay together, we will 100% do whatever it takes to stay in a conference with them, including bringing back football.

Wichita made a huge mistake giving up on football.

UC and Wichita weren't too different back in the 80's with sucky football programs. The panzies at UC were calling for UC to drop football too.

Luckily for us UC didn't give in.

Agreed they should have just tried to hang on but only because I think starting one from scratch is a way harder than having a crappy one and then start investing into it.

Never gonna happen, in fact the soccer field width track replacing old track because due to increasing ratio of women to men students WSU will probably need to add women’s soccer in the future.

Too bad cause the new stadium is suppose to seat around 6500 and the other side shows a berm but I think some of that will be seating if I understand correctly and total for up to 13,500. So why not adequate for FBS and having a track it would have been fine for starting an FCS team.

I wasn’t around when it happened in the 80’s but I think the Valley went FCS at that time. Pretty sure that’s why Tulsa eventually left valley. So I think the decision was really keep as independent, drop to FCS, or drop.

I believe Bardo was going to restart it because he wanted to move up leagues and believed that was only way. Then we got into AAC and that killed any of those ideas. I even remember the MVCF league president saying they would not take us just so we could leave the MVC in a few years.

WSU will not get forced out...ever. The AAC would look like crap forever.

Wait til you newbs go to/watch a game in Wichita. Nothing you guys have ever seen. Trust me. Them folks eat drink and breath that team in Wichita. No way the AAC would let that go. If they did I'd hope Memphis joined another conference. More than ever we need each other. We mirror each other. We're both basketball schools. Aresco would be an idiot to ask them to leave for any reason.

Yeah they're a little down at the moment but not much. In this world of what have you done for me lately, Hitachi has held it together just fine. Navy ain't leaving either. God forbid.

Some of the California school systems (Fullerton, UCI, etc.) don’t have football. I’m not sure if they are considered to have good fan support or not. Winthrop is another. A few Texas schools and North Carolina schools too, but none have much fan support. Maybe George Mason would fit in that group too. But it’s a small list as you say.

...yep the bball side of things at UAB are pretty jazzed to have WSU as conference mates... I remember UAB played up there back in the Bartow days, and UAB had a pretty solid team, but IIRC, WSU beat the brakes off of us... yeah, I just checked the 'history' and we are 0-4 against the Shockers... so... we need to get some shots at redemption... 05-mafia04-cheers

Ted Lasso is probably somewhere right now shedding a tear over the end of this stadium.

The Valley dropped football in 1985 and thus WSU (and Cincy) too, had to go independent with Notre Dame, Florida State. One of the years I was a student at WSU, Cincy was our homecoming opponent.

Had WSU been able to hang on, I would think WSU would have been invited, along with Tulsa to the big WAC expansion. Obviously that expansion didn't work out too well.

In 1982 WSU went 8-3 including a win over Kansas. Losses were to K-State, Wyoming and Tulsa. Maybe if there were as many bowl games as there are now, WSU gets invited to a bowl and does that change football's trajectory? That WSU team had three NFL players, I think: Jay Hull, Jumpy Gaithers and Anthony Jones.

Wasn’t Cincinnati long gone from the valley by 1985? Thought they left in early 70’s.

Yes, I meant to say Cincy was also independent in football.

MVC dropped football because WSU and Tulsa were the only Div 1 programs.

There were lots of Independents in 1985:
