Football wise the AAC ended up being a better conference than I expected. Basketball was a massive disappointment.

I agree on basketball.

Which is super odd, considering that the conference had two national titles in 10 tournaments (Louisville in 2013, UConn in 2014), and Houston was ranked in the top-10 consistently for three straight years and made it to four straight Sweet-16s and a national title game.

Houston was the only school that overperformed expectations over the 11 years. SMU and UCF met expectations, and arguably so did Tulsa (if you had low expectations for Tulsa, like I did). All the rest underperformed.

What was the bigger problem? Was the problem that many of the expected stalwarts of the conference (Temple, Memphis, Wichita, and post-2014 UConn) massively underperformed? Or was the problem that several of the bottom-feeders (ECU, pre-2023 Tulane, and especially USF) were even worse than advertised?

Bolded, amazing to think about these championships really. For all the hoopla in this area over B10 basketball, that conference hasn't advanced a team to an NCAA championship in 23 years (then an ACC member, Maryland did win it 21 years ago).

Overall, your summary of AAC basketball is excellent. The programs we hoped would lead really underperformed and the dregs were...as always, the dregs.

Best: UC vs Houston AAC football championship. That was the best sporting event atmosphere I've ever personally attended in my lifetime.

Worst: UC blowing a 22 point lead with 10 minutes left against Nevada. I know this isn't an AAC game but that loss hit me hard. My passion for UC basketball dropped in half that day and has never recovered.

The Wiggins pick 6 to beat smu
Sauce pick six / Warren long run into the 4th quarter against smu
The 3rd quarter of the conference championship vs Houston

Basketball
Clinching the regular season championship at Wichita
Beating Houston back to back seasons in the conference championship
The comeback win in Brannen's first year against Houston (part of that is i read Courtside)

Baseball
Winning the conference championship (by scoring 5000 runs against uconn)

Worst
Tommy tuberville and John Brannen

Top memory - Sauce's pick six as a freshman against UCF - changed the game and to some degree the Fickle era . . .

I vomit at the memory of watching freaking Tulane walk out of Nippert with the championship, the NY6 bowl and our home winning streak.

I laugh at how ECU and Wichita St. came in here thinking they were going to kick a$$ and take names.

I look forward to never again having to just suck on it whenever some B1G or SEC blowhard says "now WHO is in the AAC again???"

I blame that loss on Fickell. I think his head was somewhere else.

Like the WI interview he had the day after the ECU game?

He wanted to cash his chips in and leave.

Bolded, I was thinking about all that again this past week. I'm not looking to hijack this thread, but I do wonder when Cunningham and/or people close to the situation knew Fickell was ready to walk. I have to say I was caught by surprise. It seemed to me that he and his staff were a significant part of building a program that earned a B12 invitation and I thought he would want to see where he might take Bearcat football with P5 resources.

I've learned never to trust a coach to stick around but the timing still surprised me.

One day this season we're gonna be getting blasted by a great Big 12 team and I'm gonna look back fondly on the days where being down 10 at Tulane felt like being down 50 to Kentucky.

I don't trust a coach, but i was trusting a dad to want to coach his son. I thought he'd stick around at least for his boys career. And he brought his nephew in too. seemed deeply, personally invested for at least a couple more years. With playoff appearance proof that he could legit compete for national titles here, along with the Big12 conference upgrade i really thought his choice selection for leaving would be a lot narrower than including wisconsin.

Maybe he believed his stock was certain to drop and didnt think his son would ever play anyway? Who knows and at this point i no longer care. Big12 without him is still extremely promising. Coach Satt has impressed me and im pumped to see where he leads us.

Not that I ever have, but... I just don't get some of you people and your inferiority complexes.

We're not that far off in the B12, football or basketball.

Satterfield is not some promoted coordinator in his first coaching job. And heaven knows, our QB situation can only be better. Our D is our strength and that will at least keep us in games. It's not like this is Tuberville leaving the cupboard empty.

The AAC's champ beat the B12 champ last season on the road.

Miller has some legit horses to work with, so if we don't compete next year at least we know what the problem is.

Give us some credit, man. We've earned it.

Agreed. If UC is consistently getting blasted in Big 12 football we've either hired the wrong coach or expected too much in an inaugural season that saw quite a bit of player movement in and out, or both.

The Bearcats should be competitive most weeks against new conference foes and I wouldn't bet against taking down OK, especially if it's one of those enchanted Nip' @ Night events. Without looking back at schedules, I believe it would be the only recent win for the Bearcats over a CFP participant in this era, besides Notre Dame. Regardless of the Sooners final record this season, it would be a signature win over a historically elite opponent. And it would bring Coach Satterfield a lot of attention nationally from media and prospective recruits.

I wonder if they'll let us leave early today instead of making us stay until 5.

RE: The UC days in AAC competition are done
Anyone make the event today @ Rhinegeist? I had hoped to but couldn't make it. I think it's great to celebrate the last day in the American and first day in the Big 12 (after midnight tonight) but I do wonder about the choice of date and venue. I realize Rhinegeist is all in with their new brew Cincy Reigns, but a celebration in Fifth Third Arena would have made parking and access much easier with the Swiftees downtown plus an early Reds first pitch. Combine that with holiday weekend traffic prior to the 4th and there was much to steal the spotlight.

Here's hoping the local news can squeeze in a story about today's event and this historic move to the Big 12 becoming official tomorrow. And I bet we'll now begin a succession of announcements from UC about new team uniforms, co-branded Big 12 licensed merchandise and more.

Going to be tough to crack the news. Reds win in extra innings, and Taylor Swift is in town. That's 25 minutes of the newscast already.
