Idea to allow for 2-tier or unequal revenue.
Ok, so most ways we've seen for unequal revenue disbursement tends to lead to disruption in a conference.

What if it's an option, instead.

So a conference has 2 media deals.

1.) Football
2.) everything else

And separate GoRs for each.

And now make #1 to where each school has the option to decide in advance to throw in with the with the conference aggregate football deal negotiations, or to "go it alone" and negotiate their own deal.

So a school like FSU, or Ohio State, or Georgia, or whomever, if they decide that they can get a better deal, can then go do that, while still being a member of the conference.

Remember, we're pretty much only talking about football home games.

Might it mean that the aggregate conference deal might not be as high? maybe - that depends on how many opt-out, and who they are.

But

It also reduces the chance that those who are opting out, just leave, and then the conference loses everything.

Plus, there's no "have-nots" in this - The conference is still giving out equal shares to everyone who opted in. There's no "favoritism" to anyone.

Another way that this is very interesting, is that I think that this could finally be the way that Notre Dame joins a conference.

They can be full members, yet still be considered independent too!

I also think that the media partners would be just fine with this idea.

And by the way, this really would be a "put up or shut up" moment for all those schools who think they are better than their conference.

If you go out there and look for a separate deal, and can't get one better than the current (now expiring) conference deal, and have slink back to join forces with the rest of the aggregate conference deal - that's a hard look in the mirror...

The more I think about it, the more I really like this idea.

"They can be full members, yet still be considered independent too!"

Yes, if you make words essentially meaningless, anything is possible and true.

"Might it mean that the aggregate conference deal might not be as high? maybe - that depends on how many opt-out, and who they are."

You mean 100% not as high. How could it possibly NOT be lower when it would have fewer games, more scheduling complications, and by definition only the top ratings draws would opt out?

This also used to exist, essentially, which is why we still talk about T1, T2, and T3 rights. And we've already proven that bundling each schools T3 rights together nets more total than each school selling them independently, though some schools get less money since more money is spread evenly across the conference. Literally the Longhorn network was like 1 Texas football home game a year under it's own media rights and GOR...how'd that work out for the conference? What you're proposing is exactly that except for all football home games for a school.

Also this is exactly what exists for ND in the ACC today.
