Clemson Men's Track & Field makes most of 2nd chance...wins ACC title
Back during COVID, Clemson had made the decision to cut the men's track & field/cross country programs after the 2020-2021 academic year in attempt to reduce financial impacts to the school. At the time, the men's program was on hard times compared to their tenure from the 1980s thru 1st decade of the 2000s, when the programs was 1 of the better performing ones at the school & churned out the majority of Tiger Olympians. After petitions, a DOE complaint, & gender equity review across the athletic department, the school eventually reversed course & kept on the program.
2 years after getting a 2nd chance, the decision has borne fruit for all involved, as Clemson won the ACC Outdoor T&F title today. Despite being 7th in the nation coming in, the Tigers started the final day in 9th place. A win by the 4x100 relay team and a 1-2 finish in the 400m (where the Tigers had 4 athletes qualify for the final), along with multiple scoring finalists in 100m & 110m hurdles had the Tigers primed to break it open. Poor showings in the 800m & 400m hurdles event (where Clemson had finalists entering w/ best times among ACC athletes) put things in doubt for them w/ 3 events left. The Tigers ended strong, securing a 1-2 finish in the 200m & running an ACC meet record to win the 4x400 to edge defending champ Florida State by 1 point.
The ACC crown was Coach Mark Elliott's 1st ACC for the men's team & his 3rd overall (has 1 indoor & 1 outdoor w/ the women's team). Was also Clemson's 1st ACC men's track title since 2004 & the school's 12th outdoor ACC title overall.
