Did UNA change their fight song or just the word when the schools name was changed from Florence State?

It's the same song. I think "UNA" would have just replaced "Florence State" in the lyrics. But, to be honest, I didn't know our fight song had lyrics when I was in the band in the early 90s. 03-lmfao So, maybe those were added since then.

Along the same lines, neither of our fight songs references the "Colonel" moniker since both predate the adoption of that mascot in the 1960s. Of our two songs, one doesn't directly reference a team name at all, and the other still references our old color-based name in the title ("Hail, Hail Eastern Maroons").

RE: ASUN Fight Songs & Traditions
I've changed the title of the thread to include traditions. I'd love to know more about your schools!

Some of you may or may not know that UNA has a live lion mascot on campus.

Leo III actually had his sister Una with him for 17 years before she passed away a couple of years ago.

Throughout the years, UNA's live lion mascots have won several awards from media outlets. The original lion, Leo I, was brought to campus almost 50 years ago in 1974.

Interesting. Like the lion stuff, and I either didn't know or had forgotten that EKU was the Maroons at one point.

“Maroons” is very old-school cool. I love it.

If you want to get really technical about it, I'm not sure that "Eastern Kentucky University" ever was the Maroons. That was Eastern Kentucky State College before full university status was conferred by Frankfort.

I'll probably think of some more things, but as a general campus tradition I'll mention rubbing the toe of the Daniel Boone statue in front of the Keen Johnson building for good luck. It's often done on the day of big exams, but I usually do it on game days if I'm in town as well. The toe of the statue is rubbed a completely different color from the rest of it.

For anyone familiar with EKU's campus, the Keen Johnson building is what I would call the "signature" building in terms of it being the one you put on post-cards, and promo materials, and even one of the university logos depicts a shadowy version of it.

UNA has something now called the "lucky dip" on the first day of classes at the fountain. Of course, we didn't have it back in the day because the fountain wasn't there back then. You could still actually drive through the center of campus when I was there in the early 90s.

They also "light the fountain" nowadays which looks pretty cool.
Leo obviously not thrilled with the noise. This is right outside of his habitat. You can hear him roar!

RE: ASUN Fight Songs & Traditions
I miss the days of the student section bringing a Robert Bellarmine statue to big basketball games at Knights Hall. Not sure anyone knows where that guy is these days. Heck, I miss having a rowdy student section at home games -- off-campus Freedom Hall, while a good venue, noticeably lacks that.

One Bellarmine tradition is to, for good luck, rub the front right hoof of the Knight sculpture overlooking the quad.

Think I heard that students started occasionally leaving wishful Post-It type notes in the open palm on the Angela Merici statue at the other end of the quad.

One other thing which might be worth mentioning is that candles are lit by visitors at a cool grotto nestled below the chapel, which overlooks Frazier Stadium (lacrosse, field hockey, soccer, and track).

So proud to be an alum of this group. They toughed out the heat last week to premiere the show opener and their traditional version of "Battle Hymn of the Republic" on Saturday. Roar Lions!!

Haha! True. But, did you listen? It's a really beautiful version. They usually ask all of the current and former members of the military to stand during it and be recognized.
