B12 Data Rights Deal
https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/Da...-deal.aspx

Yormark don't mess around.

It's either genius or another sign of the college sports apocalypse.

BYU getting $$ from a conference deal to sell data to betting sites would be a bit of a Faustian Bargain.

Quote:Big 12 closes in on data rights deal

BY MICHAEL SMITH
3.21.2023

The Big 12 Conference is finalizing its first revenue-producing data and statistics partnership, industry sources say. A decision on a data partner is expected in the coming two-to-three weeks and it will require approval by the Big 12’s board. Given the conference’s deep relationship with Endeavor, which has advised the Big 12 on many issues, including its media rights, sources say IMG Arena is the frontrunner for the data rights deal. IMG Arena, which is owned by Endeavor, serves as a data distribution partner for professional leagues like the MLS and the PGA Tour.

A league’s data partner typically manages and distributes official statistics to media and fan sites. It remains to be seen if this Big 12 deal also will include the rights to sell data to sports betting services, but they are believed to be part of these negotiations. Those rights could drive up the financial value of the deal significantly. So far, only two conferences have struck data partnerships -- the Mid-American with Genius Sports and the Pac-12 with Tempus Ex Machina. Those arrangements did not include the ability to sell stats to sports betting services at the time.

Reports are that BYU has already indicated they will opt out of this due to gambling being involved.

RE: B12 Data Rights Deal
What kind of data could they be selling to gambling sites that would be a concern for any of the schools? Game statistics are already out there so I'm confused on what the concern would be.

Unfortunately, it may be a bit of each? If college sports as we know it is nearing its end, I love that Yormark is leading the Big 12. That dude leaves no stone unturned. So glad we don't have a traditionalist at the helm......

Wow, the Big 12 is the gift that keeps on giving for UC and fellow conference members.

I have no idea what the "data deal" looks like for the Pac 12 but I have to believe the Big 12 grows more attractive by the day to any wavering members of the Pac 12 sitting and waiting (nearly halfway through July) and wondering if its games will all be streamed only in the coming years. I can't imagine Deion wants to be at that competitive disadvantage in terms of visibility and recruiting.

I’d like to see what’s in the Mormon Church’s mega endowment and portfolio of businesses to see how consistent they are.

I would be shocked if they knowingly invested in gambling directly.

Of course, these days it's difficult to truly avoid investing in anything because so many companies are exposed to it in at least a small way. Even innocuous publicly traded stocks like 7-11 have slot machines in some of their locations.

But there's a big difference between accidentally having a small exposure and purposefully accepting large sums directly from a business that you find immoral.

The Pac-12 doesn't have one. They're scrambling to get one but there aren't any takers because it is considered low valu[/php]e

BYU church and their athletics seem to work separately on things like this. The Church has like 100+ billion dollars in endowment while only allowing the athletics just under 3 billion dollars of it. It wouldn't surprise me if they turn a blind eye to the data deal.

I’m pretty sure the LDS portfolio is more like $500 billion. It’s huge. I recently watched a clip of a former manager who squealed on the church’s management of funds. They keep info about the portfolio close to the vest.

Edited to add: you are correct, it is $100-150B. The fund was fined a whopping $4 million for violations.

I couldn’t be happier with BY with where the conference is at in this era of college athletics.

Personally, I love straight forward and upfront approach he has for his vision and business for the Big 12 in general. Cracks me up he’s just gone into College athletics and basically threw the finger to all the old heads and their back door handshake deal style approach. Mack Rhoades is a great listen as well. Must watch IMO if your a college sport nut like me.

Agreeing with all you wrote and enjoying the ride with UC--not just in a P5 but one that appears to be rising. All this after toiling in the obscurity of the American, post Big East.
