Lightfoot wasn't the choice for progressives in 2019. The Chicago Teacher's Union spent big money to defeat her, and Lightfoot won because she ran up big margins in exactly the same conservative-leaning neighborhoods that supported Vallas.

In 2015, Rahm ran as the most conservative major candidate of the four, and comfortably won. Same thing in 2011. And then we had Richard Daley for twenty years, a guy who faced a leftward challenge every time and usually crushed them.

Chicago is VERY Democratic. If you openly talk about running for office as a Republican, like Paul Vallas did, yeah, party-ID voters aren't going to rally for you and you're going to have a hard time. Is this a town that works like a giant sociology class at Oberlin? Absolutely not.

1989 to 2011 was one guy, btw. Let's not pretend white guys kept winning. A popular guy kept winning as part of the machine. Very difficult to beat in general. Plus he was obviously doing enough to placate the hyper progressives.

Anybody who can read the freakin' wikipedia article about that election or has spent more than a week in this city or knows *anything* about our elections knows that isn't true. Lightfoot won the 2019 election by dominating among *white voters*, and winning the highest percentage among the *whitest, most conservative neighborhoods*. The ones full of police officers. She probably ran the least ethnic-vote pandering campaign in two decades here.

The partisan left in these cities always think the problem isn't liberal principals, its just that the last person in charge didn't go far enough.

White voters are liberal AF dude. Just b/c they're white that doesn't make them conservative or even moderate. Keep in mind 2019 was in the middle of the Trump era (phase 1) where liberal backlash particularly amongst whites was intense AF.

As a black gay woman she didn't have to run a campaign promoting that. Everyone knew it. It was enough based on announcing it.

BTW neighborhoods have shifted a bunch the past several years. What you're describing as "conservative" neighborhoods may not be or have been anymore.
