Is this another name for the traditional “Director of Football Operations” position? Kinda what it sounds like to me but who knows.

I love it. Joel Klatt said on a recent podcast that every college football program needs a General Manager these days. Too much for the HC to manage between recruiting, NIL, the portal, and actually coaching your football team.

I assume the “GM” job is to focus on player acquisition.

Football ops would be more of an Ops position, where a GM would deal with player personnel. They'd probably oversee the recruiting coordinator, NIL deals, keeping players in good academic standing, or whatever else personnel-wise the coach wants them to cover.

Also per my understanding of P5 programs, this is the guy who looks at potential portal aquisitions.

Indeed. In my mind I was lumping traditional recruiting and portal recruiting together.

RE: Football General Manager
Does this explain why we haven't been very active in the portal so far? Is Coach LT waiting for the new GM (and OC) to onboard, and then they will load up in JAN and FEB?
