Surprising as this is a scrimmage yes, but until Nick figures out how to play on the defensive end of the court his minutes will be sparse. He is instant offense but not enough to negate his defensive liabilities.

As you say, its ultimately a scrimmage so I still would have expected to see him get maybe a few token minutes. But if he's a healthy scratch as a "learning experience" kind of deal then that's the coach's prerogative and is understandable.

At least we know who Coach Siddle's intial "top 11" are right now, of which I would expect to see at least 9 see the floor against Chapel Hill: Shy, White, Harden-Hayes, Newby, Kelly, Thomas, Harvey, McGriff, Van Der Heijden.

Very good chance this is disciplinary in nature...Otherwise I'm guessing he gets some floor time.I agree.....coaches prerogative

We've now forced 20 E&H turnovers. +10 turnover margin.

+19 rebounding as well. Needed to see that after struggling out of the gates on the glass.

Farrar has gotten some token minutes after all. Surigao just entered as well.

Farrar 2-3 from the field in his 4 minutes of action so far, with a rebound and a steal.

RE: Exhibition: vs. Emory & Henry
My observations:

* Thomas made the absolute most of Shy being in foul trouble. I love Shy, AND its going to be hard to keep Thomas off the court.

* Coach Siddle said at halftime that he's still trying to figure out his rotation, and it showed tonight. But rightfully so; there are a lot of new faces. Foul trouble for 4 key players clouded things a bit but I anticipate the 9 guys I mentioned earlier (Shy, White, Harden-Hayes, Newby, Kelly, Thomas, Harvey, Van Der Heijden, McGriff) to be the "main" rotation guys to begin the season. Still, Enoh and Farrar made some noise tonight, too. Depth is a good problem to have!

* I have no idea how much of what happened tonight will translate to the UNC game, but I am very excited to see us, in person, start off the season right away with a big challenge. Why not pull off the upset while we're there?

Thomas looked very good to me. He needs minutes. White looked good too. Hayes played well and helped the press. Ross looked good to me too. Nice to see McGriff out there some. You know what you’re getting with the other bigs. Eric V has a nice shot as does Harvey and Farrar. Hopefully Newby will get rolling soon.

Hope Shy is okay and didn’t get hurt while slipping down. We need him in the mix for sure.

RE: Exhibition: vs. Emory & Henry
Just got home from the game. Shaky start when we were lazy and weak on the boards. Once we decided to rebound the game did a 180.

Biggest disappointment - Newby. Weak on defense and brought very little on offense. Just didn't see anything that would keep him on the court.

Biggest surprise - Noah Ross. Tenacious defender, plays smart and under control, great passing and positioning in all aspects. Went to the basket with ease once he got past some first game jitters. He really seems like the "glue" guy that can make a team operate on all cylinders

Most impressive - JThomas, M H Hayes, T White - These guys bring intensity and effort and amp up the offense and defense. They represent what Siddle wants on the floor.

My starting five

Thomas, Phillips, Hayes, White, Kelly

Subs -Newby, Harvey, Ross, VanDH, V Enoh.

We have so much more size and depth than last year. Depending on the opponent I could see J Harvey start and although I think Ross could be starter caliber by conference play, as a freshman he will get a lot of PT because he's that good, but I don't see who he would start over. UNLESS we were struggling from some reason and needed a big shakeup like last year.

I was most disappointed in the fact we never got out on the run from defensive rebounds or steals. I was most impressed with the damage we can do on the boards when we decide to.

Anything is possible, but I can't imagine this team outside the top 4 in the CAA. And if we can figure things out, we can win the regular season and/or the tournament.

Keep in mind as the game wears on it's easy to outsize, and out athlete a D2 team. I'm obviously happy with the significant amount of size we have compared to last year, but, can't really see how we are going to rebound from playing a D2 team. For reference they had two guys over 6'6, one guy over 210 pounds and one of them was a Freshman.

Rebounding is as much about determination and hustle as it is about size. Thus the reason we were getting out rebounded for most of the first half. When you combine size with determination hustle, that's when you have the potential to be a good rebounding team. And that's what I saw last night once We put in the hustle and determination to hit the boards.

I don't disagree, Vonte is a perfect example, he wasn't always the biggest guy he just had the best "motor". That said, every time we play a lesser D2/D3 team as the game wears on we usually see we out athlete them. Certainly not bad, but I don't take much from last night. Will be interested to see how we do on Monday against a bigger team full of McDonalds all Americans

Kudos to the students for turning out last night for an exhibition. StarNews said they created an overflow in the student section

I sat in the overflow with my daughter. Overflow didn't have a lot of students, but it meant downstairs was packed. Took a long time for the team to do something to get them involved.

Ross could be the best newcomer and he can play multiple spots-kid is very talented . Saw him in high school and he was impressive on both ends. I also like Hodge but he looks like more a late bloomer type who will get better with size and strength. Thomas -gotta play some defense but is super athletic for a CAA guard.

Agree on all this except defense for Thomas. He is the key to what Siddle wants. He pressures without fouling, has the athleticism and quickness to get deflections and can get the steal. And then his speed on the break allows him to beat the defense to the basket. He's going to set the tone for defensive intensity on this team going forward and he gets the crowd into the game when he does it. Already one of my favorite all time players at UNCW.

It's good to see Thomas seems to have carried over the momentum he started during the last week of the season.

I have to agree 100% with 82. Homeboy was all over it and was light out. It was an awesome performance the other night. I came away IMPRESSED to the point that I felt that this guy was the best player on the floor BAR NONE. To me, it wasn't even close. White was awesome and we need him to just play his game which is great, as expected but WOW, Thomas was lights out on both ends. The separation that he gets and then the pin point passing that he did (players could count the seams after his passes) and really just could have scored at will with his power near the hole is scary. To me, the player of the game and showed why he will be invaluable to this team. We have a potential superstar on our hands if he just does his thing and it's just a matter of time before everyone know it. He has next level ability and looks to have fun doing it. Just one game but if you look back at the CBI final it was Thomas defense on their PG that finailized the game. Count me in!
