RE: JMU/ODU create "Royal Rivalry"
Also the last time we separated ODU wanted to approach CUSA together. JMU said no so they approached CUSA alone. I suspect we'll try to stick together if a desire or opportunity to move comes up in the future, but it probably won't be a deal breaker. Like others have said though, this conference is exactly what we've been hoping for and I'd imagine you could say the same for pretty much all of at least the east.

At least from the JMU side, we aren't going anywhere for a while, unless a P5 swooped in suddenly with big money. Our AD wanted and worked hard to get us in a conference with regional opponents and rivalries. SBC is exactly what we wanted.

That's great to hear. I deleted my original comment (on second thought, I felt it was "too far out there" for this thread), but I know people occasionally float the idea of ODU to the AAC one day, because of the Hampton Roads Metro area. It's nice to see ODU really commit to JMU as a rival, and vice versa.

CUSA definitely soured us on that model of conference and it doesn’t seem like there will be the money there to make it worth it. Fans and admin both wanted regional rivals. It’s hard to imagine not being in a conference with JMU, or really most of the eastern teams far into the future. We’re building a good thing, the ACC is unlikely to call any of us, the AAC has lost its shine as a destination. We’re getting back to what made college sports fun to start and are getting national recognition for it.

Hard to say at the moment. Historically ODU has an advantage in head to head in most every sport we both play.

ODU leads (5): mens hoops, womens hoops, football (close) field hockey, baseball (close)

Jmu leads (3): mens soccer, womens soccer, lacrosse.

Odu does not play softball. Any talk of them starting a progam up?

There was when we moved up to meet Title 9 but I think it was determined we didn’t have the room (or rather didn’t want to sacrifice that much real estate) to build a softball field. We added volleyball and cut wrestling, I think we’re in compliance now but not sure.

Thanks for the info.

Hopefully you all reconsider now that you are in the sun belt, which is going to be a wicked good softball league.

And with the extra attention in the sport on espn the last decade, it’s another opportunity for national attention and marketing

Real estate’s at a premium on and around ODU’s campus and a softball field would take up enough to add another residential or academic building so I don’t see it as likely. I’m not sure what the original plan was when originally announced as that situation hasn’t changed.

We're going to be adding beach volleyball next to meet Title IX.

I am frankly stunned that the AAC's media deal has not yet been re-worked to account for the massive losses they'll have once Cinn, Houston and UCF leave. The replacements don't bring anywhere near the value of the departees. Moving forward, the difference between the AAC media deal and the Sun Belt should not be nearly the gap that it currently is.
Yeah, I know all about the media markets angle....That said, if a tree falls in the middle of a forest and no is there-does it make a sound??

Also worth noting, as it doesn't make it into the narrative as presented by GS, that the Eagles were never close to winning the all-around trophy, so in addition to little interest to begin with, it was never a real battle. I think the last year was reasonably close, like a four game difference maybe(?), but everyone just cared about the big sports anyway.

I do enjoy reading that GS was "bamboozled" out of a contest in which football would hold more weight, though...football between our schools was viewed in a very different light at the time...

Thing is, our Duke isn’t a royal title. It’s the second president of the school’s last name.

Meh. I’d rather see how we stack up against UVA in the Capitol One Cup.

Historically it isn't even close. Even JMU's more successful programs over the decades (thinking Field Hockey, WLacrosse, WBball, MBball at times) likely have lopsided records against ODU.

I'd guess that it's closer to even over the past 15 years after JMU's department shifted their focus in 2006 from offering a whole bunch of sports with little investment to fully funding every sport offered, to getting Title IX compliant, to ensuring a football program at all costs (the actual shift in focus depends on who you are).

I'd like to think that with all the improvements around JMU's athletic department the last few years means we start to see a continued advantage across all sports (especially with MBall and WBall with the new arena).

Football was only worth two points. Basketball was worth a total of 6 points between Men’s and Women’s. Football did not hold more weight.

It was a dumb system, and the fact that our former AD agreed to it proved his ineptitude.

Ah, you're right, I never even paid attention to the fact that we were down in points when 2020 spring sports came to an unexpected end. Also, FWIW, I think basketball only hit 6 points if we also met in the tourney, but either way, yeah, I don't know how anyone could look at the point possibilities and not do the quick math to figure out that MBB + WBB > Football if you're only giving 2 points to the football game.

No one thought it was a great system, but I also have yet to see any all-sports competition system that people actually care about.

I could see us eventually doing something worthwhile to represent the football rivalry-that's-not-a-rivalry, but I realize there's still a bit of an uphill battle to get a lot of GS fans to acknowledge they care about that one.

Yea we went down this road before and it would have been better to just give a trophy to the winner of the football game instead.

RE: JMU/ODU create "Royal Rivalry"
I shifted Duke Dawg's post around, added Tennis (shouldn't have), and added records (JMU win - ODU win - Tie). Added records for last 10 games and it looks like JMU is mostly moving in the right direction on the sports that ODU is leading and extending the advantage in sports JMU is leading.

ODU has a sizeable lead:
Mens Hoops (28-58). Last 10 is 4-6 (back to 2011)
Women's Hoops (22-51). Last 10 is 8-2 (back to 2009)
Field Hockey (7-19). Last 10 is 7-3 (back to 2011)
W Tennis (16-29) including the 1-20 since 1998 OUCH
M Tennis (2-32)

JMU has a sizeable lead:
Women's Soccer (16-6-1). Last 10 is 7-3 (back to 2005)
Lacrosse (36-8). Last 10 is 9-1 (back to 2004)
Women's Swimming and Diving (8-1)

Close / not a lot of action:
Men's Soccer (19-13-8). Last 10 is 3-4-3 (back to 2004)
Womens VBall 2-0
Football is 0-2
Baseball is 51-59 and 5-5 in last 10

Sports that didn't have historical records:
Men's Golf
Women's Golf

JMU sports without a ODU counter: Women's Track and Field (ODU seems to have an official club team - https://odutrack.com/), Women's Cross Country (ODU dropped 2002)
ODU sports without a JMU counter: Men's and Women's Sailing, Women's Rowing, Men's Swimming (JMU dropped in 2006)

EDIT: Added more sports to answer Mturn017's question and updated men's soccer since ODU is trying to rewrite history.

Do y'all have a "Battle for the Crown"?

No. But dukes don't wear crowns, they wear coronets.

Give crowns to ODU when they win, and give JMU fatigue caps when they win. Problem solved. 02-13-banana
