By Wednesday, Secretary of State Katie Hobbs (D), who oversees elections here, referred the matter to the U.S. Justice Department and the Arizona attorney general. A spokesperson for the Justice Department confirmed on Thursday that it received the referral but declined to comment.

Brittni Thomason, a spokesperson for the Arizona attorney general, confirmed the office had received Hobbs’s referral, which is under review. “Everyone should feel safe exercising their voting rights,” Thomason said in a statement. Voters who feel threatened while dropping off their ballots should immediately contact police, she said.

Though unobtrusive and few in number here, the drop boxes have become a symbol of mistrust in American elections among supporters of former president Donald Trump.

Trump and his allies nationally and in Arizona have urged supporters to monitor outdoor drop boxes, intended to serve as safe and convenient tools to deposit ballots.

They have also sought to undermine faith and trust in drop boxes, citing the “2000 Mules” film, which purports to use cellphone geolocation data to prove “mules” illegally gathered and submitted ballots in Arizona and other states. The film has been widely discredited, in part because the data is imprecise. Yet it has taken hold here and elsewhere, prompting Republican activists who dispute the accuracy of the 2020 presidential election to launch homegrown patrol and monitoring operations, complete with online sign-up sheets advertised on social media.

I've got a tip for the moron Katie Hobbs - why not do your damn job and make sure that ballots you send out are correct? If you are incompetent at your current job, why should people trust you to be governor?

As long as the person doing the surveillance didn't interfere and just monitored, it's legal I believe.

Anyone who truly supports election integrity should have no problem with a passive observer being in attendance at these locations. The only ones who might take issue with it are those intent on cheating not wishing to be caught.

As to the above, that's honestly laughable. While the picture may be misleading in terms of what they were doing/where they were/etc for most of the time they were there, they have absolutely no legitimate reason to be where they are... not as in its illegal, but as in... why are you here?? Can I help you with something? They certainly appear to be wearing a 'uniform'... and berets are only really popular with middle aged golfers and para-military organizations. Throw in the bomber jacket and military style patches and it certainly begs the question as to their purpose/intentions. They don't appear to be selling cookies. Maybe they want to talk to me about my car warranty??

Now add in the specifics of that picture... where their back is to the doors... anyone with a brain (so I realize this doesn't apply to lots on the left) would say that the impression being given in the photo, true or not is that they are not simply 'standing back' as you suggested...

The photo may or may not reflect reality... but the potential reality of what is presented is vastly worse than 90% of the claims of abuse, intimidation and disenfranchisement that the left puts forward.

Lol. The cell phone data from 2000 Mules is “imprecise”? For one thing, the cell phone data is paired with video. Secondly—security camera video paired with “imprecise” cell phone geo-location data is the EXACT same combination being used by Federal authorities to charge and convict Jan 6th violators.
