Football Playoff
What would the football playoff system look like in a Power 2 world?

Based upon the 8 championship Football Final 4s we have as data points right now IF the maximum benefit for TV is a North/South championship as some have suggested - how does the B1G stay somewhat close to the SEC to make that scenario a good bet?

Granted the current system is a small sample size in the Semi-Final games (16 in total) that have been played so far the South's record is 13-8, while the North's record is 3-8. The four programs outside of the B1G that have provided "Northern" representation have been ND, Oregon, Washington, and Cincinnati. This would seem to indicate getting ND, Oregon, and Washington should be a priority for the B1G. But that's just me.

Can the B1G truly afford programs that aren't likely to contribute in the near future as potential football tournament entries such as UNC? I suppose the North Carolina market and the looking down the road toward taking over the basketball tourney might be reasons enough. But will UVA? Duke? and GT? It will be interesting to see what develops.

Anyway back to the data analysis on the current Final Four system for football.

As it stands right now the SEC has had 3 programs appear a total of 10 times - Alabama 7, Georgia 2, and LSU 1.

The B1G has had 3 programs appear 6 times - Ohio St 4, Michigan State 1, Michigan 1.

The Big 12 has had one program Oklahoma appear a total of 4 times.

The PAC has had two programs appear a total of 2 times - Oregon 1, Washington 1.

And finally the ACC has had 2 programs appear for a total of 7 times - Clemson 6, FSU 1. Although technically one of Notre Dame's 2 appearances was as an ACC member. But their fans don't like to be reminded of that. LOL

Doesn't seem to me the SEC needs Clemson, FSU, UNC (or NC State), and UVA (or VT) and need even less Miami instead of UVA or VT but some combo of 4 of these 7 ACC programs just might seal the B1G's fate as the Little Brother of the Power 2.

The B1G will always have nearly equal footing in terms of TV $$$ and of course they will puff their chests out for their far superior academics - but competitive on the football field? They will need bigger gets than UNC, UVA, Duke, and GT. But I have been known to be wrong before.

Anyway this is a first world issue and me and the program I follow looks like will have to settle for second or third world issues.

It will be what it will be. And my best advice is not to take too seriously all the nonsense that will ensue before the actual games start in the Fall.

Cheers,
Neil

Could this be a roadmap to ACC expansion (assuming ESPN decides they way 2 of a P3 rather than 1 of a P2?). In that case, ESPN should pay the ACC to absorb Washington, Oregon, and Cincinnati - probably along with Stanford for the CA tv audience.

It would be totally worth it just to see what Blue & Gold Dude would have to say...

The more teams that are not in the SEC or B1G making the playoffs, the better. Oklahoma moving to the SEC was horrible, because it was the only B12 team that has made the 4 team playoffs.

Nothing will change.

They'll say it's open to everyone... and then Alabama will kill everybody.

Today Gold & Blue says he is "hearing from reliable sources" ACC is exploring a western pod of Oregon, Washington, Stanford, and Utah. Colorado, Arizona and ASU to the Big 12. The three remaining PAC schools go to the MWC.

It's all throwing crap at a wall stuff but he certainly is more inventive at this than many others out there. LOL

RE: Football Playoff
In a P2 breakaway world like this:

SEC holds an internal 12 team playoff; B1G holds an internal 12 team playoff; and then the winners of the SEC & B1G play in a national championship game.

There's more than enough NFL stadiums in both the SEC and B1G to hold the semis and finals of each conference and then across the land to hold the national championship.
