Who are we kidding
This is a marriage between corporate interests and state and federal government. We as taxpayers fund these universities and our federal taxes go towards the endowments. These TV dollars go a long way to funding olympic sports. We as taxpayers are losing important rivalries via this realignment nonsense. We have become subject to what ESPN wants. ESPN just isn't going to open their pocket books for the ACC. They're just going to consolidate their assets; meaning ACC schools will be heading to the SEC. Where are our legislatures at in all of this? They've been on the sidelines for decades. This is impossible not to make a political issue well because politics are intertwined. We're being sold out, and this includes those that will end up "safe."

Hypothetical:
Suppose the ACC is able to add some teams, reopen the contract, and get close to true market value - around $30M for TV rights, plus almost that much from all other sources. Let's round up to $60M per school per year. Now, suppose no other school adds net value to the SEC, and even Texas and OU prove to be a minor bump - say, from $70 up to about $75M. Would a $15M/year gap - with a seat at the big boy table - be such a terrible outcome?

RE: Who are we kidding
I think the legislatures are on summer holidays. That may be why these contracts end on June 30th. I am not sure the politicians can really say anything. In theory sports is different from academics so I am not sure they can block a school from leaving. Texas had their chance and they had a lot of schools on the losing end and they did nothing.
Oklahoma had a chance and they did nothing. The California politicians will have a chance in the upcoming months and if I were a gambler, I would say no way they are going to do anything.

That would be a great outcome but I doubt that would happen at least in the next few years. I doubt there are schools that could add to the football based contract, however in maybe 5 to 10 years, it might be possible to even exceed the SEC and B1G, if the basketball and other sports are able to sell monthly subscriptions around the world (this is assuming we will be in the streaming era for Conference Networks in 5 to 10 years)

Even if that happened it doesn't change the fact that government is married to FOX and Disney.
