Yeah, I imagine the funds the states use for such a program comes from the feds. Anyway, we still packed a lunch each morning for each kid. They can't stand the school food, even if it is free.

Democrat Harry Truman started free lunches in the 1940s.

What Trump did was when schools shut down during the pandemic was allow kids who were receiving the lunches and some that were not, to still receive those lunches. When schools re-opened he extended it for that following school year.

This article says Trump was not going to extend the free lunch program if they couldn't verify the income due to flexibility he allowed during the pandemic. So the Trump admin extended it, now the Biden administration is in the same boat.

I don't mind free meals for kids that really need it. That meal may be all they eat on any particular day. I don't agree with it for everyone across the board. That seems like a huge waste of funds.

Lunch should be part of all schools budget for grades 1-12 and parent should have the option to send a lunch with their child if they want them to have something different. Each person living in that city has school taxes taken out of their pay along with most service bills (cable/internet/gas/ele and I'm sure a few others). Lunch and a breakfast should be part of the day and already paid for from the taxes collected.

EBT is how folks get the SNAP benefits to actually purchase goods. It's basically a debit card.
