RE: RINO incumbent Tom Price loses primary
It's interesting to me how quickly a GOP member is labelled a RINO, when as best I can tell his only "crimes" were January 6th related - voting to impeach Trump, and voting to have a commission investigate January 6th. He even supported The Big Lie, voting against certification of the 2020 election. Do any of you have issues with other policy stances he has taken during his career, aside from the 2nd impeachment & January 6th?
That said, this was the first race where Trump had an endorsed challenger up against a House incumbent who voted for impeachment and he handily won, with Rice not even managing to keep his opponent under 50%+1 and force a runoff. Perhaps we've learned you can cross Trump but you can't be ANTI-Trump, at least not in a safely red district. Kemp & Raffensperger in Georgia, as well as Nancy Mace further down the SC coast in a less-red district would seem to fall in the crossed Trump but not anti-Trump category, and they all defeated their Trump endorsed challengers without need of a runoff. If the Rice example holds, certainly doesn't bode well for Liz Cheney in Wyoming who I think we all expect to lose her seat in the primary.
Will be interesting to see what happens with the other House members who voted to impeach (of the original 10, 4 are not running again) -
Tom Rice (SC 7th, R+26) - lost primary to Trump-backed Russell Fry
Jamie Herrera Butler (Washington 3rd, R+11) - primary on 8/2, Trump backs Joe Kent
Dan Newhouse (Washington 4th, R+26) - primary on 8/2, Trump backs Loren Culp
Peter Meijer (Michigan 3rd, D+3) - primary on 8/2, Trump backs John Gibbs
Liz Cheney (Wyoming AL, R+50) - primary on 8/16, Trump backs Harriet Hageman
David Valadao (California 22nd, D+10) - advanced to general election by finishing in top 2, no Trump-backed challenger
