Japan is Simmering
https://thediplomat.com/2022/04/defense-...apability/
Like a pressure cooker Japan is dealing with hostile Governments from all sides in Russia, China, and North Korea. Japan recently purchased some MV 22 Ospreys as well as a cache of other top US military weapons on top of continuing their own military investments. Japan is calling it the Counterstrike Capability. What is really is a Military buildup for readiness. Japanese consider the Chinese as a GRAVE THREAT. This is coming to a boiling point and more and Japanese are ready to do whatever it takes. We are living in some scary times.

I think Japan will be a nuclear armed power by the end of the decade---that prediction becomes a certainty if Taiwan is attacked and captured without any direct US intervention during this decade. Frankly, Im surprised Taiwan has not joined the nuclear armed club. They are the ones that really need to have that capability as it would essentially end their current dilemma. China could no long bully them internationally if Taiwan was a nuclear armed democracy. It wouldnt take much. Some small truck mounted mobile nuclear missile launchers and a handful of nuclear armed ultra-quiet subs. If Taiwan had those two weapons systems----invading Taiwan would simply cease to be a viable option for China. Taiwan might be incapable of holding off China conventionally----but they would have the ability to reduce China to a third world nation for a century---perhaps even permanently---if Taiwan was facing extinction with only the nuclear card left to play. But thats enough---because the reality is nuclear powers dont really lose wars anymore---if they are threatened to the point they may cease to exist---they announce their intent to play the nuclear card---a scenario where nobody wins-----instantly forcing a negotiated settlement that each side can live with.

Do you really think Japan doesn't have some nukes squirreled away?

I dont think they do. Their society has been very anti-nuke since WWII (for very understandable reasons). That said, I do think they have the technology to build them and I think they could build them very quickly if they decided to do so. They obviously already have the capability for building reliable delivery systems if they want. I think Taiwan is technologically in the same boat (ie-capable of building nukes--including a delivery system--very quickly if they decided to do so).

This, for all rights and purposes Japan is already a nuclear power. They have the materials and technology to create one if they felt the need very quickly. Since they choose not to be ******** to the world no one bats an idea at their nuclear power program churning out tons of weapons grade plutonium they have stored away.

That sentiment is changing daily as more and more Japanese see the threats and the missiles being launched near them. China did not do themselves any favors when they released a video this past summer stating they use their Nuclear Capabilities on Japan if they intervened over Taiwan. A lot of sabre rattling that the populace of Japan had to watch and hear about. Plus, the island dsiputes and China having no regard for water territory of Japan.

Japan also has the most developed Nano Technology in the world and has military Nano weapons as well.
What does nano Tech do to your body?
The effects of inhaled nanoparticles in the body may include lung inflammation and heart problems. Studies in humans show that breathing in diesel soot causes a general inflammatory response and alters the system that regulates the involuntary functions in the cardiovascular system, such as control of heart rate. Sampling of what it can do to you.

True.
Although in fairness, China hasn’t been on “our side” since 1949, and as for the USSR, well, for ~41 months we had a common enemy. That’s not really the same thing as being allies.

It was very much the enemy of my enemy is my friend. That said---I think we had a real chance of bringing them in as true allies after the USSR fell. That was a missed opportunity.

With the lessons of the failed Budapest Memorandum playing out now, it really sounds like it might be best for world peace if Taiwan did have a nuclear arsenal large enough to serve as an effective deterrent to China. I know Taiwan is very technologically advanced and supposedly had a now-scuttled nuclear program in the 80s, do you think they could put enough nukes together in time to threaten China back from the brink if there were signs of the Chinese naval buildup that we'd expect to precede an invasion?

Highly unlikely given their past as not to. But, Japan is signaling that Taiwan is now part of their security. It seems apparent more than ever that an attack on a Taiwan could green light Japan’s military capabilities. And, with the superiority of the Japanese Submarines which China is well aware of would make Taiwan a much more difficult task.
This article a few months old shows the direction and really the growing frustration of the Japanese toward China.

Free democracies with no intent to attack anyone vs tyrant dictatorships with intent to attack neighbors. Why would there even be a question?

RE: Japan is Simmering
A nuclear Japan can arm Taiwan without creating a global crisis. The United States cannot. Japan can defend the Kuril Islands. The United States cannot. Japan can form Pacific alliances in their self-interest and while China may not like it if Japan is nuclear capable China will gripe and threaten but will do nothing. A fully capable Japan is in U.S. self-interests as long as we treat them well.
The fly in the ointment is our current treatment of Israel and Taiwan. If we don't treat close allies any better than that, why should we be trusted?
Most of us no longer fully trust our government. Why should other nations? It's a serious observation and a legitimate question.
