Macron won despite a 36% approval rating because his opponent was equally or even more disliked.

That’s what they want people to believe.

Setting up for Dementia Biden who will be at or below 36% in 2024 ‘surprisingly’ win again. I think I saw His chief of staff basically tweeted that the France election this is a good sign for Biden or those with low approval rating

France is a liberal country by our standards. The fact that an extreme right wing candidate whose party is considered by the French to be "nationalist" in an NSDAP kind of way received 46% of the vote should be a major red flag as to how hated the EU, and its open border policies, is becoming to the French middle class and to those living in more rural areas.

Oft unmentioned is the rise of the same sentiment in Germany and other countries in the EU. Brexit was merely the first expression of this, and was expressed in a much more positive way. As the continued pushback on Brexit continues it will only serve to alienate and radicalize more opposition.

Macron won. But it is a pyrrhic victory at best as the country is clearly polarizing, like ours.

Indeed, and the 2027 election will be very interesting. Far-left candidate Jean-Luc Melenchon wasn't far from making the runoff this time, and if the far left and far right had unified behind one candidate each we could very well have seen Macron fail to even make the 2nd round. The traditional parties of the center-left and center-right got the lowest vote shares in their history in Round 1, far less than the extremists. If Macron isn't able to grow his party and anoint a centrist heir over the next 5 years, Round 2 in 2027 will likely offer France only a stark choice between one extreme or the other.
