Which is why "hate crime" laws are so stupid. Punish the act, not what's in a person's mind or heart. I also don't understand why attempted murder doesn't get the same prison sentence as murder. Just because someone is sh!tty at killing shouldn't get them a lesser sentence.

Democrats had many tricks up their sleeves to prevent blacks from voting: poll taxes, whites-only primaries, literacy tests, grandfather clauses, multiple ballots/multiple voting locations, hide-and-seek polls, etc.

But the MOST effective way to prevent black and white republicans from voting was lynching.

Between 1882 and 1964 there were 4,743 lynchings:

• 3,446 blacks
• 1,297 whites
  

The Republican Party platform included bans on lynching. Democrats continuously blocked anti-lynching bills.

C'mon now, the "Party of Lincoln" is not the Republican party today. And the Dems of the 50's are more in line with the southern Republicans of today.
