There’s actually very nice beaches in Norfolk.

Back when we lived in VA Beach, the Mrs dragged me to one of those Home-a-rama showcases of beach houses at East Oceanview Beach in Norfolk. It was nice. We usually went to Sandbridge Beach, because we lived down that way.

Is that near that really long pier? I have been there couple of times and depending upon how windy it is, it can be a very nice place to drop a hook and spend some time.

Oceanview Beach Pier in Norfolk is the longest freestanding fishing pier in North America.

04-cheers The things you learn on a message board :) I know it was long but didn't know that it was longest in the America.

It's five miles to the east, right where Ocean View Avenue turns into Shore Drive. East Beach has spurred a lot more new development in the area and it's expanding west towards the pier. East Beach resembles Chicks more than the old Ocean View. Lot of million dollar homes there.

Please no one post pictures of our beach on campus, it's too pristine and luxurious for mortal eyes.

Yeah, by the time they get done arguing this our entire campus will likely be underwater

04-cheers I haven't been there after i left HR so its been a while. We usually stay in the Portsmouth/Suffolk or near the water front in Norfolk when we visit for games but its good to hear that area is coming along nicely. Will probably visit this fall.

A little tidbit about West Virginia:

When the "Flood Control Act of 1936" was passed the US Army Corps of Engineers began erecting dykes, levees, and dams throughout the US. It was customary that when a lake was built, the dam was named after the city that it submerged (i.e. Dale Hollow, KY). My uncle and dad went scuba diving at Dale Hollow in the 80's and they saw old buildings and cars, etc....

Back in that day, there was a town in WV called Gad. The US Army COE decided that this would be the location for a lake, so they erected the dam and flooded the town. Then, a feeling of apprehension befell them because in the Bible Belt of WV, they realized they could call the lake "Gad Lake"... but they would surely run into a problem if the followed tradition and also called it "Gad Dam".

Hence, that is why there is a Summerville Lake and Dam in Summersville, WV.

True story, folks.

There would be less of a gene pool and more of a gene droplet in that scenario

JMU has a lakefront beach adjoining a truck stop and it's sand is made entirely of ground chicken beaks.

This made me laugh. I'm going to delete my post and deny I ever wrote this, but I've missed you guys. I do, of course, hate you, though.

Small world. He was a great sub by the way. He had zero interest in teaching anything.

If you are talking about Harrison's Pier (old name I guess) near the Thirsty Camel. My uncle owned that house with two wraparound decks and a widow's watch on the third floor, just a house or two West of there. Spent many Christmas' and crab-picking weekends there as a child. Great old house with incredible views and molding. Messed around on that pier often.

Wow didn't know it was rebuilt after 2003 and you are correct about Harrison's pier being its old name. Good to know some history and your personal connection to it Smitty. 04-cheers
