RE: How can the ACC increase TV revenue
The ACC vs Europe idea is actually very interesting. Perhaps get Canada, Australia involved also.

Who would we be playing? There’s nothing remotely equivalent to NCAA sports anywhere other than Canada and Canada’s equivalent would be about Division II in the U.S.

RE: How can the ACC increase TV revenue
The ACC would probably have to play a lower level development al club teams of the main Euro league teams. European basketball is setup more like minor league basketball. With the Pro teams associated with clubs that engage in youth development.

The real problem is that these games would be considered exhibitionist which would limit value And if the games showed value, keeping them exclusive could be hard. The only thing that makes me think their could be value are events like the recent world baseball tournament.

Too many teams for the current media network space. Fox and Disney have chosen their brands and all current moves are meant to drive consolidation.

The ACC has an app. It is called ACCN on the ESPN app.

Expansion for the sake of expansion will not drive any significant revenue.

If you want more revenue you need something new and exclusive. The conferences have tried to make brands exclusive, but that strategy is failing with the trends in brand consolidation in media. The current trend is a limited P2 that will monopolize network coverage, and separate themselves from rest of the FBS/CFP level teams. This trend will continue across all sports.

That means needing something new, that people will follow, that the other groups don't possess. For the ACC, that was the ACC basketball tournament deciding the conference champion for the limited field NCAA. However the ACC tourney has lost value with the increasing field size of the NCAA tourney field and at large bids.

The ACC needs something new that the other conferences are not likely to copy. The problem is the current post season frameworks are setup in a manner now that prevent anything that make a conference unique and drive interest.

Items that could drive interest.

Relegation. Technically divisionless team schedules are setup year to year with a top half and a bottom half playing themselves with limited crossover. Top half teams are guaranteed more exposure and postseason opportunities. Bottom teams get an exclusive end of season relegation weekend where top performing teams from the bottom get to challenge low performing top teams. Divisions change based on the results of relegation weekend.

This could possibly be done for all the major sports. This also may satisfy the keep what you kill crowd wanting non equal revenue.

International play.

Forget ACC -SEC basketball challenges. Create an exclusive ACC vs Euro/world challenge. Create a larger audience for the ACC. The problem would be keeping such a scheme exclusive.

But these types of ideas are likely to drive interest, and more revenue.

International play is good, but would likely be copied. Still, it's worth taking a look at, IMO.

But as for something unique, I got it: water polo!!! The SEC is too interested in baseball to go after water polo, IMO. Similarly, the B1G is too interested in lacrosse to go after water polo, so there you have it: a unique ACC sport that would be highly unlikely to be duplicated.

RE: How can the ACC increase TV revenue
I did say the new item is something people follow. I don't know many people actually follow water polo. Or, Lacrosse, field hockey, and other low level sports. You would be better off getting everybody to play hockey, or even beach volleyball.

The point is what ideas can make the ACC unique and exclusive viewing. I am not sure the ACC and it's members have creativity or risk capacity to engage in such new thinking.

See recent posts on other threads suggesting ACC still engaging in brand exclusivity strategy by trying to entice ND to join in full. I think this is futile while still being a part of the current NCAA framework. Same with adding PAC teams to the conference. Part of the PAC's media contract problems are some of it's members perception's of joining the BIG in future brand consolidation.

That leaves trying to be something new. But that is difficult if members want to stay apart of the current NCAA framework. You have to be willing to do things that others will copy if they work. It is easier to adopt new and exclusive ideas if you leave the NCAA framework, but that risks losing value of being a part of that framework.

I just don't think the ACC members are collectively willing (or able) to risk the communal changes for the benefit of the entire league.

New sports ideas (that people actually follow)
Hockey
MMA cage fighting
Boxing
Motorsports, beyond SAE student club events.
beach volleyball

New frameworks
Adopt the collective bargaining model with student athletes. Miami may be showing the worth of the paid athlete model in basketball.

Move soccer season to align with FIFA framework and engage in international exhibitions.
International exhibitions with sports the International community follows.

The ACC should consider buying Bally's, if it's current bankruptcy still allows. Potential leverage against current media. Works better with PAC partnership (not merger).

Relegation. As described in previous post, or maybe partner with a G5 group, that acts as the lower level partner.

Which ideas may draw renewed interest and larger audiences. Adding sports that have large followings. Early adoption of future trends such as collective bargaining with athletes. Aligning with international community on shared sports. Will audiences tune in to see if a bad down year FSU or Clemson, be relegated to lower status, or if a motivated USF, or ECU can achieve promotion.

RE: How can the ACC increase TV revenue
If the ACCN was rebranded to something nationally appealing and was able to broadcast games from other conferences (with ESPN’s approval), would the rebranded ACCN be able to get top carriage fees from other states?

I would call it something like Coast to Coast Sports Network and bill it as a competitor or something different from ESPN. Perhaps this would work as a merger with the Pac12 Network. Show regional games unique to other region’s experience.

RE: How can the ACC increase TV revenue
I think the ACC needs summer content. There’s no college sports during the summer so the ACC needs to create some.

My idea is 3 on 3 basketball. You’d have to use different players than those who play 5 on 5 but it would still draw far more interest than the current replays. Summer hoops would also fit with the ACC’s identity. Do it as a non-NCAA sport at first and dare the NCAA not to recognize it. There is plenty of talent who would love to play 3 on 3 at an ACC school, especially if the players have an avenue to the 5 on 5 team. Three on three basketball is plenty watchable. Would I get season tickets to a Duke 3 on 3 season during the summer? Probably.

The only other thing I can imagine during the summer is to televise the international basketball games that ACC teams play over the summer, perhaps by insisting that ACC teams play their summer games in Canada so they’re easier to televise. Of course, you’re only allowed an international trip once every four years so there would only be limited content.

So this thread was started more than a year ago, and surprisingly, nobody (in this forum or in the ACC or any of its members) has yet found a way the ACC can increase its TV revenue in any meaningful way. Maybe, just maybe, such a way doesn't actually exist.

Reminds me of another topic that was started more than a year ago, and surprisingly, nobody (in this forum or in the ACC or any of its members) has yet found a way the ACC schools can "escape the GOR" in any meaningful way. Maybe, just maybe, such a way doesn't actually exist.

Well Moses got Rameses to let his people go. Perhaps there is a Moses on Staff at FSU?

They don't need a Moses ON the staff
...they need a Moses WITH a staff!
