I've seen that clip several times before, but allowed it to get lost in the musty recesses of my memory. Thanks for digging it up.

I always enjoy those clips of him educating those who don't quite get it with their pie in the sky belief systems. Donahue was a liberal knob anyways.
Who has a deep understanding and who just spouts the platitudes and slogans but know little?

RE: Oldie but Goodie from Milton Friedman
Thanks for posting again.
Uncle Miltie was the best. I remember in my junior year, reading CAPITALISM AND FREEDOM and thinking, holy crap, this is the first thing I've read since I've been here that made any sense at all. With the liberty of a fifth year, thanks to the Navy, I added Economics to Math as my undergraduate double major (wasn't really in any hurry to get to Vietnam anyway).

And he still is.
Donahue mostly backed out of the media-scrum about 25 years ago. But for those who remember, the “opposition” guests on his show were typically the least intelligent/articulate/ persuasive people he or his assistants could find. Destroying such people in debate may have flattered his ego, but it left him utterly unprepared for the likes of Friedman.

He really was. Although, I’ve only heard the title “Uncle Miltie” used to describe Milton Berle. Did Friedman use that one, too?

Was that assigned reading for a class?

Friedman and Harry Browne pretty much cemented my belief system.

A bunch of us who studied him, and considered ourselves followers of his, used it. I agree that the term is more commonly used for Berle.

Yep. ECON 201, taught by Gordon Tullock, who was an economic adviser to the Barry Goldwater campaign. We thought Tullock was a pompous ass, but loved Friedman.
Along about page 39 in CAPITALISM AND FREEDOM, Friedman gives a laundry list of what government should and should not do. Updated for today's issues, that would be a wonderful starting point for a republican platform.
