ODU's starters from last season at 1B, 3B, CF, and DH also returned. Coach Finwood said that with Carter Trice moving from 2B to LF to replace the only starter lost from last season (Kyle Battle), he is able to move Chris Dengler back in to play 2B. Dengler started last season at 2B before he had an early season injury that kept him out the rest of the year. He's healed up and the coach says that he's a better defensive 2B than Trice and the double play combination of him and Tommy Bell should be improved.

ODU did lose their top 2 starting pitchers and their 2nd or 3rd best reliever. That said, the pitcher that started last season's CUSA Championship game for ODU is one of the other 2 main starters that is back.

Anything can happen in baseball and my comments aren't meant to take away from any of the other teams and where they were picked. I fully expect Southern Miss, LA Tech, Charlotte, and FAU to be threats to win the title. Some other team could surprise everyone as well. It all starts tomorrow so good luck to all the schools.

EDIT: Baseball America picked ODU as the #24 team in their pre-season Top 25 teams in the country.

Yes, as does the 1 first place vote for FIU. Southern Miss in 1st (I assume) is based on us hosting the Tournament, as several sites have ODU and LaTech rated above us.

Coach Finwood said on his podcast that he always votes ODU 5th (lucky number I presume, it's also the number on his uniform). One might assume other coaches are doing funny things like that out of superstition, messing up how they might actually vote.

ODU defeats Iona today 4-2 in Norfolk. ODU won the game playing small ball with 0 errors, 2 HBP (hit batters), 3 hits (all singles), 4 walks, and 5 stolen bases (none caught stealing).

USM defeated North Alabama 8-1. 2nd largest opening day crowd at The Pete with over 4k in attendance. Not shabby considering temps were in the mid 40s. With weather warming up tomorrow it should be another stellar crowd.

Tonight Tech's pitchers threw 14 K's and I don't think they walked anybody.

That sounds pretty strong by the Dogs today. Wichita is usually pretty good. ODU's bats didn't show up today, but they got the win 4-2 regardless. Congratulations on the nice start to your season. Keep it rolling till we meet again - this time in Norfolk!!!
