I grew up down the street from rice and we always had these little “ screech” owls screeching at night sometimes right outside my window so I always Associated rice with the little Cantankerous creatures
Two other local owls are the large barn owl and the huge great horned owl
Also I’ve worked at and with rice and the girls are super sexy, heck at UofH too especially at the clear lake campus, heck all college girls are sexy…

We still beat highly touted UAB in both major revenue sports this year, so we’re not totally inept. Just slightly so.

1. We had the greatest coach in the history of sport as our baseball coach
2. Our AD fired him and hired some guy who’d won one regional somewhere random. WTF?
3. We’ve just hired our next ringer coach. Played for our HOF coach Way back when Rice originally became elite.

Got it right this time and it won’t be long before that shows up in rankings and postseason results.

The "humidity" at rice ain't even on the same league as UH when it comes to basketball and football. Be thankful Rice is even in AAC because the athletics have nothing to bring at this point in time to the AAC.

Not getting the connection between Rice and Bucky Fuller. Explain. Did Rice scientists discover Buckminsterfullerene, the molecule?

Nevermind. Found it.

Rice Bowl

Got the Nobel for it there as well.

The amazing thing wass that after getting the Nobel, Rice wanted to make sure that Smalley stayed with Rice instead of jumping with his new-found fame and accolades.

Smalley made a demand of his staying at Rice that he be allowed to teach freshman chemistry from time to time. Which he did.

Kind of awesome that a Nobel laureate made a requisite for his staying that he be able to teach a freshman class, and kind of awesome that a whole slew of Owlets got to say that they were taught freshman chemistry by a then - Nobel laureate.

I don't know how the various owls should be identified, but one of them should be known as "The Hooters".

The thing you need to know about the Rice Owls is "The Mob".
You should heed this warning.

The Mob has provided great entertainment for a long time but the aggies
don't accept humor well.

That is impressive. I was a chem major at one time. Did not have a Nobel prize winner for a teacher, but had a brilliant organic chemistry prof who was the discoverer of the formation of nitrosamines when you prepared beef on a grill. This was in the 1960's. He lectured for an hour without notes, scribbling equations and such the right off the top of his head. One of the three most impressive profs I had at Temple. One of the kids in the class immersed himself in chemistry to such a degree that the Philadelphia police were interested in his work. They busted him for making LSD in his apartment.

RE: I feel like I have no CSN home, and fun facts about Rice!
On a similar level, when I was at Rice the President of Rice was a person named Norman Hackerman,

Norm served as the 18th President of the University of Texas at Austin (1967–1970)and later as the 4th President of Rice University (1970–1985). He was an internationally known expert in metal corrosion, and was ultimately awarded the National Science Medal in 1993 for his work in chemistry.

One will note his being President of major universities and think it odd that a university adminstrator would be awarded such a prestigious award. Well, ol' Norm made it a condition at UT to still teach and conduct research.

And when he was approached by Rice, made that ongoing issue a staple of his tenure at Rice. Hackerman, all during his tenure at Rice, operated and maintained a constant office in the Chemistry Department, ran a research lab on campus, and every third or fourth year taught a section of either freshman chemistry or some inorganic metallic based chemistry at the sophomore to junior level. I also had heard he, from time to time, took on a graduate student as their advisor and sheperded their path through the Rice PhD program in chemistry.

On top of it, you always saw him biking to and from his lab to his on-campus house. And somehow he always seemed to be able to greet about a quarter of the undergraduate students on his path by name.

One time I was bailing out of the grad student lounge (located in the basement of the chemistry building, the same lounge mentioned above with respect to the newly found wasp) at 2pm on a Saturday after having some very cheap beer. (mind you I was a mere sophomore, no way a grad student, but Valhalla did not care about your student status). Norman was cycling down the inner loop and called me out, saying 'I see you are having a productive Saturday afternoon, Mr Tonic' (obviously I have changed the name there). I was floored that he would know who I was, since at that time I had not been brought before the proctor that I would become intimately familiar with for my last years at Rice.

But, still kind of cool that the President of the University would call out to me while on his Saturday afternoon bike sojourn.

...hopefully better days ahead for each of us... We hired Samford's (the cats who hung 50 (albeit a losing effort) against Florida in football this season) baseball coach recently (Casey Dunn), and he has a lot of promise... got Samford to the tourney three times in his tenure there... and is a local guy, so knows the area - we have some decent HS teams around here.

RE: I feel like I have no CSN home, and fun facts about Rice!
Fun fact about Rice: the MAJOR event in the school year is an event known as the Beer-Bike race. During non-Covid times it pulls almost all the Rice student community together for the day, and I would hazard to guess that during normal times more alums go to Rice for Beer Bike than go to Homecoming.

Description of Beer Bike ---- bike race between the 'dorms', one lap per rider, someone has to chug a 32-oz beer clean after the preceding rider has crossed the line, and the next rider cannot leave before the beer is chugged.

Think customized mouth fitting tops on the cans, carburetors, and the beer being boiled to a warm flat slosh so it can be chugged easier. Also think the 32 ozs being chugged clean in 3 secs or less as a general rule.

Let’s be clear. There’s more than one pub on campus.

Valhalla is the graduate student pub. More of a Tavern, actually kind of a dive. But the selection is good and the prices are amazing.

Willy’s is the undergraduate pub. Also a cool scene but I haven’t been in quite a while. Also great pitcher specials and unique “Rice” touches.

If you live on campus, no designated driver needed. If you live off-campus, you know someone on campus with an extra sofa.

Sadly the U of NC System does not allow that in our public schools.

The scene at Willy's changed a lot when the drinking age went from 18 to 21. I think I've only been in there once in the last 35 years or more.
