A big measurement of a QBs success is winning pct. Lombardi may not be a great passer but the team has responded quite well to his leadership. After 7 games here is how he stacks up against other starting QBs (minimum of 5 starts):
Harnish 29-18 .617
Lynch 24-4 .857
Hare 15-6 .714
Graham 3-7 .300
Maddie 3-2. .600
Santa 4-1 .800
Childers 15-9 .625
Bowers 4-10 .285
Lombardi 5-2 .714

That's even more amazing. Iowa was his first start, wasn't it? FSU had something like 17 guys drafted. BG we just couldn't stop their offense, and Utah State, well, that was a clunker. They did have a good defense and Simms kept missing FGs.
