Once the dust settles and
UCF, Cincy, UH, and BYU are on board, should B12 stay at 12 or go big with 14 or 16?
I could see it either way. 16 could make tons of sense. Add 2 or 3 from MWC and 1 or 2 from AAC.

This all depends on when Oklahoma and Texas leave and then evaluating financial performance due to the addition of new members. But I think Memphis and Boise have a very good chance in the future.

I think any of those 4 would be good.

Another Texas school? I doubt it.

I agree, I doubt SMU. But I don't think they would be a bad add, just not very likely add.

I wouldn't be quick to expand and if they do I think 14 should be max. Memphis and SMU are the only two schools that really make sense. With Memphis you would get really good basketball, good football over the last 4-5 years, and a new market. With four teams already in Texas, and SMU being a small, private school, I don't think they bring anything market/TV wise, but who else is there?

Another candidate is to go west, and add CSU (good school, but lower athletic engagement) or Boise (good football brand, even more remote, not as good academically, smaller state than CO).

I definitely agree with Memphis as 13. The question is 14.

Agreed. In the future/if money permits, Colorado St should be our project the same way Rutgers was the BIGs

RE: Once the dust settles and
There’s likely some element of “chicken and the egg” when it comes to athletic engagement and conference perception. If CSU were to move up, it may raise engagement among students and alumni, although on-field success is often the primary driver.

Since 2000 they have been to 10 bowls and won 4 of them. There were 3 10-win seasons among them as well, and the Mountain West is a fun conference.

Memphis is a no brainer to add. TBH, I think the B12 is making a mistake not adding them now.

With Tech and TCU, SMU is redundant.

I would prefer Colorado St. over Boise St. I am still upset over what happened with the Big East and I don't think they are the power they used to be.

If we move to 14, I like Memphis and CSU.

If we move later to 16, then I like USF and UNM. Keep adding on both sides.

If it gets crazy and goes to 18, then I like a western “double-dip” of UNLV and SDSU.

But for now, even 14 would be too much at the moment. 16 and 18 are just holiday meanderings.

I'd go Memphis 13 and Colorado State at 14. Then if they were to go 16 I think New Mexico (football has been woof but it is a flagship state university and they are a institutional fit) then probably USF but would also entertain Tulane or SMU.

I would prefer Memphis and Colorado State or SMU if we went to 14. Colorado State checks all the boxes except for on field success, but they could blossom into a very quality program. SMU has the history and the money, but has a smaller fanbase and I’m not sure you TCU fans would be on board with that either (Similar to how I don’t want to bring usf along).

RE: Once the dust settles and
I don't see the need for SMU or USF.

USF - Plays in a stadium with a big Pirate ship. That may seem ticky tacky, but I think it's a bigger deal than people let on. On Campus Stadiums are a huge deal in my eyes. I've had season tickets since 2007, except for the one season UC played at Paul Brown Stadium. There is a reason for that.

SMU - It's such a small school, and the conference is already Texas heavy. They haven't been the same, since the death penalty.

I like Memphis well enough. The Liberty Bowl is MEH though.

If it were my call, I would stay at 12.

I would stay at 12 for at least a decade, personally. There's good options available to pick from, but the Big 12 needs to get a solid footing to build off of first especially with Texas and Oklahoma leaving. You don't want to "muddy" the waters too quickly and not allow these 12 to showcase what we have. Then the teams that are available aren't likely going anywhere so I don't think there's any reason to rush it.

Memphis is probably first one out right now.

From there there's an argument for Boise, SDSU, UNLV, CSU, SMU, Tulane, or USF should the money be there for more teams.

That said we're probably standing pat.

Going off the last 3 years of TV ratings, the best available candidates would be:

Those numbers do not include the Army-Navy game, as CBS has exclusive rights and thus has zero value to ESPN or FOX. Data source is SportsMediaWatch.

Only time will tell how much AAC viewership will drop once UC, UCF, and UH leave... we may find that schools like Fresno State or App State are actually bigger TV draws than Tulsa or USF.

14 is easier to manage than 16 (9 conference games). And the big 12 owns the rights to "Biig 14". Personally I think the big 12 should rebrand as the Big 14 in 2025.

my preference for team 13 & 14:
Air Force & Navy
or
CSU & USF
