Interestingly enough, the Missouri Valley Football Conference has had the same commissioner since 1982.

So it would appear the magic formula is to be commissioner of a conference that either starts or ends up with Missouri Valley in the name.

And to think that I have lived 56 years, following college football for 50 of them, and until this moment had never heard of Patty Viverito (the commissioner you reference. just looked it up) or the "Missouri Valley Football Conference".

Also, Viverito has been a "Senior Associate Commissioner" of the MVC since 1992, while serving as Commissioner of the MVFC since 1982.

She must be what, like 80 years old?

She was the commissioner of the Gateway Conference. It was a women's athletic conference that also began sponsoring football in 1985. It was made up of most of the MVC members. They merged with the Missouri Valley in 1992, and the football conference spun off into its own organization called the Gateway Football Conference, which later became the MVFC. When the Gateway merged with the Valley, she became the associate commissioner of the MVC and the commissioner of the Gateway/MVFC. Yeah, she's been there forever.

So, the MVFC is separate from the MVC, but shares offices and staff with the MVC.

She is also the commissioner of the Pioneer Football League: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pioneer_Football_League

It's strange that the women's conference was a totally different organization, but I guess that dates from the days before the NCAA began sponsoring women's athletics.

How on earth can she be the commissioner of two conferences and the Associate Commissioner of a third? I've never heard of such a thing.

About the NCAA and women's athletics, good point. IIRC, the first year the NCAA held a women's hoops championship was 1982, so that date, and her becoming commissioner of the Gateway that same year, may not be coincidental.

She is the commissioner of two single-sport, football-only conferences, whose members are each full members of another D-I conference. It's a good guess that neither of those one-sport conferences takes up even 20% of her annual working hours, leaving at least 60% of her time, probably more, for her MVC duties.

Yeah, I'm not sure what the duties of a commissioner of the football conferences are at that level, outside of scheduling conference games and scheduling officials. They're not negotiating TV contracts at that level, unless the MVFC has a tiny one.

RE: MVC announcing first new commissioner in 33 years
I would think the MVFC takes up the bulk of her time, the PFL is a non scholarship D1 conference that exists basically out of convenience, outside of scheduling and some basic media stuff there likely isn't a ton to do. I think teams handle their own TV deals, and it seems like basically any school that wants in can join.

The MVFC is a top tier FCS conference, the schools and their presidents are a lot more about football, on aggregate.

I think the Pioneer was formed from the ashes of the MVC/Gateway merger, so maybe she just sorta wound up managing football for both conferences? It certainly is odd
