yes, good anticipation, cutting, timing. he won't get away with 90% of it in D1 basketball.
Agreed. The best D1 players can't get away with good anticipation, cutting and timing.
The kid sees the chess board very well and has an excellent shot that takes no time. That's workable for any real coaching staff at any level. I think he'll overcome all those other Pono shortcomings, be they real or lack of good clips. Good tapes is a problem. I've looked at Farmer's and there's nothing on those can't be found by much lower players so it's not all in the tapes. It's choosing the right AAU, getting the right backing, having the right competition with measurables...
Unfortunately, Covid stopped play-offs last year just short of Shawnee playing Rogers' all-D1 measurables where we could see how well Shawnee kids would do against the superior looking ht, speed and arm length. Shawnee and Mangas had throttled teams that had beaten that Rogers' team but we all know how tricky that transitive reasoning can be.
57 pt against 15th ranked D2 team isn't enough. This year, Rossford is the only other high ranked D2 in region and they do not have any high recruits in which to compare skills. D3 privates seem to be better at grabbing the high recruits but if Shawnee gets to states, they might get to be tested by the lebrons and or Buchtel's Livingston.

ps: good discussion. I'm learning a lot about the recruiting and differences between D1 and D2 looks. Helpful for a different discussion I'm having.

I think i still have a Dave Bones Cage Scope tee shirt. And there can’t be more than one or two other people on here who know what the hell we’re talking about. Maybe none.

I knew Dave. Along with Frank Kralick two of the biggest Rocket fans ever. Dave was doing recruiting newsletters and running his camp in Kentucky when almost nobody else was. Every big name coach in the country called him.

Frank Kralick, if he was the teacher at Start high back in the years 67-71 when I went to school there, I had him as a teacher then. He was a great teacher ! My years at Start I remember Al Peake had just graduated and he went to U. of Detroit when the great Spencer Hayward was there. I am also thinking of a 6-7 center Craig Lynch who I had the pleasure of watching him play at Start with scoring averages of 21-24 points a game along with 8 boards a game. I was hoping he would have gone to UT instead of the Pelicans of Furman.

Yes it was and yes he did. He went to virtually every Rocket basketball practice for decades. You couldn’t help but learn a lot of basketball watching Coach Nichols and Coach McDonald run a practice.

RE: TK's Comments Tonight
Dave Bones was one of Coach Nichols very close confidants. He was at many practices, every home game and at most of the road games.
He was truly a national expert with such a low key persona. Detroit Rocket is right, every DI coach knew of Dave.
One thing that seemed to work was that Dave knew what type of player would fit UT hoops. Must have made some early screening easier for UT.

Springboro----When Frank Kralick was at Start his good buddy also teaching at Start was former UT QB and future UT Head Coach Dan Simrell.

Lima Shawnee 88
Akron Buchtel 74
Led by 20 much of the game. George Mangas with 40 points and no anticipation, cutting or timing permitted. All leak-outs and free-buckets. Promise.
Bucktel has Chris Livingston, lead candidate for Mr. Basketball and if the NBA would allow it, a direct jump plus a few more of those long D1 candidates.
BUUUUUUTTTT Mangas isn't good enough for D1 or UToledo?

Wow, that’s a real frog stomping! Buchtel looked awfully strong! Go Indians. I think I read that they have another guy who signed to play D1 ball.

They got the labrons next so it will be a different animal. They also have a high D1 but a higher average and deeper team than Buchtel. Been posted on another board that most of the Shawnee kids are district bred. Going against an all-star team drawing from NE Ohio and trained with NBA money is going to be a bit of a challenge.

My concern is Mangas gets held to 35 and the Indians barely scrape out a double figure win. My brothers were there when Miller led team went to state and he was Mr. Basketball. Mangas, et al is making everyone forget that team. I see why people say he doesn’t have the tools but Bob Nichols would love this guy.

I .... do .... not ... see why ANYONE would say he doesn't have the tools. I think he would adpat to any offense and has not shown any inadequacies to prevent it. He does what his coach tells him and what his team needs. If that's not running 100 mph up and down the cort then so be it. Anyone watching him that thinks he cannot do that.... I don't think they see the athlete I do. I don't think they see the court vision I beleive he has and the forward thinking. I don't know NBA caliber but I'm sure P5.

Hmmm - Joey Holifield has entered the transfer portal and is leaving Oakland. Where will he go?

His stock is way down, I wouldn't expect him to stay at the D1 level.
