MSM interview with 3 Doctors on opening grade schools
The Cincinnati Enquirer (the biggest daily paper in Cincinnati) interviewed 3 medical experts on sending kids to school.
The experts:
Dr. Kevin Joseph, chief medical officer, TriHealth.
Dr. Thomas Lamarre, infectious disease specialist, The Christ Hospital.
Dr. Robert Frenck, professor of pediatrics for the Division of Infectious Diseases at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.
All three would send their kids to school this fall, although all 3 said schools should require facemasks for everyone over 10 years old (except when eating). Here are their answers to the trickier questions:
Quote:3) Would you allow your child to take a school bus? If so, one student per bus bench (typically, it’s two)?
Joseph: Yes. "I would allow them, as long as everyone on the bus is required to wear a mask."
Frenck: Maybe."If possible, I would encourage alternative methods of transportation. But, many people may not have an option. In that case, one student per bench, with a mask. He added that "temperatures should be taken before a student boards a bus."
Lamarre: Yes. "I would allow my children to ride the bus, with social distancing measures in place – one child per seat – and wearing masks with windows open when safe and feasible." He thinks assigned seating might be a good way to enforce the distancing.
Quote:5) Would you require your child’s classroom school desks to be separated by 6 feet? (Some are doing 3 feet). Would you keep your child home if the desks are 3 feet apart?
Joseph: "If everyone is wearing a mask, I would not keep my child home if the desks are 3 feet apart."
Frenck: "Three feet is probably sufficient." Remember, he said, "Most droplets don't travel past 3 feet." And the virus is transmitted through droplets, often by coughing, sneezing or talking.
Lamarre: While "6 feet (or more) is ideal," he said, "I would send my child if desks are 3 feet apart. But mask-wearing is also important. "Group size and ventilation of the classroom are also important considerations."
Quote:6) If a student or teacher in your child’s classroom gets COVID-19, would you quarantine your child at home for 14 days?
Joseph: No. "It is not medically necessary to quarantine someone who has been around someone that has been positive."
Frenck: No. "However, the children in the classroom should be re-instructed about good hand washing, face covering and social distancing."
Lamarre: Not necessarily. "However, if there is concern for significant exposure – or the level of exposure cannot be obtained – then yes, home quarantine would be appropriate."

I've given up hope that my District won't bow to the pressure of the Governor and teachers' unions (although, in Virginia, they are technically not "unions").

RE: MSM interview with 3 Doctors on opening grade schools
My brother down in NC pulled his kids out of public and placed them in a private school that is doing in-class instrucion. I have a feeling even the privates may have to go virtual if any outbreak at the school happens. Problem with that is I'm pretty sure private schools don't give refunds.
