RE: LA City Council approves first step in replacing LAPD with community responders
I don't like the idea that they're not part of the police as I think that somewhat defeats the purpose, but I don't have a problem with this and am glad that such a left-leaning city is putting their lives where their mouths are. If they can't get people to do it... If the 'fears' are realized... If the situation does not improve, then at least we will have facts.
I don't think an officer with a gun, nor someone completely unarmed should be sent to someone having a psychotic event.... but I'd like to think that even if an armed officer were sent, that his first option wouldn't be to kill the guy. Same with what ends up being an unsuspected ambush. We sent an armed officer and he was shot and killed... so what difference did the presence of his gun make, at least to him?
Lots of people who would make good social workers are currently serving as Baristas at Starbucks with their BA/Psychology.

Most social workers I know lean H A R D left.... so yeah, I see your point... but at least they're sending their own.... in a place where they will be hard-pressed to argue 'the right' caused the results. I know they will anyway like they do with Illinois and the gun control there and LA County blaming Trump over the re-closing of bars... but still.
