I have long felt that the sovereign status of the tribes was a problem. Sooner or later there would be issues. This is one where the tribes are doing checkpoints on state and federal highways related to coronavirus.

We should set up the reservations as distinct counties, or cities in the case of the small western reservations in places like New Mexico and California. Grandfather their existing casinos, but "buy out" the sovereignity. There will be a few who will refuse, but the potential problems will be reduced and having distinct counties will make them more integrated with the rest of their state. The reservations are some of the poorest areas in the country. The reservation system has never worked well.
