Flu & Pneumonia requires a percentage of overall deaths of 7.3% to be epidemic
The CDC threshold for percentage of deaths across the country for flu and pneumonia to be 7.3% per week to be considered an epidemic. Anyone want to calculate the percentage of deaths per week across the country from CoVid-19 to see if it is an epidemic or does it have a lower threshold?
Seasonal flu increase likely due to CoVid-19 outbreak???
Does this even make any sense to anyone. If they are different, how can one affect the other?
Quote:The percentage of visits to healthcare providers for influenza-like illness increased from 5.1 to 5.2 percent during the week ending March 7, according to the CDC. In addition, 41 states -- as well as New York City and Puerto Rico -- reported "high" flu activity during the most recent period, up from 40 the previous week.
Quote:Even so, the percentage of deaths across the country linked with pneumonia and flu during the week ending March 7 was 7.1 percent, which remains below the agency's epidemic threshold of 7.3 percent.
So, it is only considered an epidemic if 7.3% of ALL deaths in America in a given week are due to Flu and/or Pneumonia, but 7.2%, Nothing to see here. Carry on.
Quote:hospitalization rates for children up to four years of age -- at 88.9 per 100,000 -- and adults between 18 and 49 years of age -- at 32.8 per 100,000 -- are now the highest CDC has on record for these age groups, surpassing those reported during the 2009 H1N1 flu pandemic.
Who knew?

I would say the increase is because people are rushing to the doctor and finding out they have the flu. In a normal year they would not even go to the doctor for their symptoms.
