If you were doing things right, you ended up with torn pants and shirt, and some blood, but mostly from scuffed knees and elbows. A broken bone wasnt necessarily desired, but nobody could deny that you were pretty cool for the next few weeks if you did break an arm and had a cast to prove it.
We did that, too.
I was in 3rd or 4th grade, Brian was a year or two younger. Playing STQ, I (not being a small child) came down on his leg and snapped his femur just above the knee. Clean break. Got some pins or plates (can't remember which). Back at school on crutches a couple days later. As the bone was healing, it started growing abnormally. The growths were cancerous. They tried chemo and radiation. Round and round. They ended up needing to amputate a few years later. Sometimes life just happens. He went on to have a pretty solid golf career.
