RE: ***Official ECU Pernicious Pirates vs Temple Fighting Night Owls (ESPN 8pm Thurs)***
My fellow Owls fans have stated very clearly the schizophrenic nature of our team. Our defense however has been outstanding. NCAA stats says we’ve given up 69 points this year or 17.3 points per game. This is misleading however as 2 TDs and 3 safeties are inexplicably counted against the defense, meaning our D actually has given up 49 points, 12.3 per game. This defense will face what Pirates fans here have described as the teams weakness, their offense. ECU averages 21.4 points per game and improved on that average last week v ODU. But vick mike, Temples D gave up 38 to Buffalo on the road? Not exactly. There was a pick 6; a bad snap on a punt gave the Bulls the ball inside our 5; a strip sack fumble gave it to them in the red zone, so 21 points due to bad O and ST.
On the other side of the ball, Temple scores 30.5/game. However, 56 points were against Bucknell and our D has a TD. ECU only allows 22.6 points per game. As pointed out by a Pirate fan above our O has been shaky, prone to turnovers and bad execution. The last 3 quarters against GT however we went with our running game which sparked a positive result.
After the NC ST game many ECU fans said that the Wolfpack D would be the best they would face. In all humbleness I believe the Owls are better. The Pirates will need to shut down Temples O and take advantage of our miscues in order to win. Looking forward to both of our teams repping our schools and the American on national TV tonight.
One last note, love the Fighting Owls logo. May borrow it.
ECU puts up a good fight but Temple closes it out at the end. ECU gains a moral victory from which to build.
Fishpro - you know Temple sports pretty well. Do you have any knowledge about the phrase "Fightin' Night Owls?"
Could be part of one of Temple's fight songs, perhaps.
"The owl has been the symbol and mascot for Temple University since its founding in the 1880s. Temple was the first school in the United States to adopt the owl as its symbol or mascot. The owl, a nocturnal hunter, was initially adopted as a symbol because Temple University began as a night school for young people... "
Russell Conwell, Temple's founder, encouraged these students with the remark: "The owl of the night makes the eagle of the day."
Would like to see the term "Night Owls" incorporated back in to the team name or image, perhaps an Owl logo with moon in background.
No, but that logo above looks to be from the 1930's when the Owls drew good crowds in their own stadium, before de-emphasizing football soon after the Sugar Bowl game with Tulane. The biggest mistake in the school's history.[/code]
couldn't find the 1935 sugar bowl, but here's footage of the 1938 NIT championship game

I little misleading to qualify everything on one side and not the other. If you don't think some of the points that we've given up have been due to picks, bad snaps, bad O and ST...
RE: ***Official ECU Pernicious Pirates vs Temple Fighting Night Owls (ESPN 8pm Thurs)***
It's gonna take ECU playing it's best game and Temple playing bad to win. Covering would be a big success IMO. Temple has the best defense we've played by far IMO, and our offense has struggled to move the ball on anyone. I think our defense is very improved, and could keep us in this game for a while, but it's gonna take turnovers and probably some good plays on special teams to be able to score points.

If that's all you knew about him, growing up, you didn't know 1/10th of the story. He was a great man and a great coach.
Never watched it before today, but to me this is what college basketball is all about. Would have loved to have played for this man. Those who did were lucky indeed.
There are hundreds of wonderful stories about Coach Chaney. He has always been larger than life, in the best sense of the word, with all of his humanity, and all the trials he encountered along the way.
God bless John Chaney!

UConn, NCAA: Not First Time Crossing Paths
By Staff Report

The NCAA is investigating the UConn men’s basketball program in response to allegations made last fall. The inquiry comes at a time when the Huskies have been in turmoil and in a downward spiral competitively.
On Friday, UConn confirmed via a statement, that the NCAA has launched “an inquiry into the men’s basketball program.” It is not the first time UConn and the NCAA have crossed paths that resulted in the university paying a price:

Sorry didn’t mean to be misleading; just pointing out our D as our strength.

Thanks for bringing this up.
When Joe Paterno was fired from psu for covering up a decade of child rape by his long time assistant coach Jerry Sandusky, psu students rioted in protest causing millions in damages.
When the Cosby sexual predator allegations came out, 20,000 Temple students signed petitions demanding his removal from any official connections to Temple. While Cosby is a disgraceful rapist, our students reacted positively to have him gone.
