My son was at the Defense Language Institute, and he said everyone was really cool with the exception of the Marines who just walked down the sidewalks looking like they were trying to start a fight with everyone. He said none of the other services even paid attention to them. They were like Francis in the movie Stripes.

My friend's mom -who is Egyptian by birth and who was raised there- taught at the DLI (if it's the one at Ft. Bragg) for years, retiring from there back in the late 90's or early 2000's if I'm not mistaken.

Regarding the Marines, I think that it's an insult to stereotype all of them as being the same. Just as the case with all people, you have some bad apples in the group. Most of them are fine people.

I don't think anyone would want any part of a Marines football team. I have a feeling the tactics might not always be legal, but your defense will end up on the ground and they'll be in the endzone.

So, it would be just like playing against the Naval Academy? At least that's the way it's gone for ECU the last few times we've played them. LOL

Not sure if you did this intentionally, but "Balls to the wall" actually comes from aviation.

Here's a picture of a C-17 pilot grabbing the throttle levers, which are traditionally 'ball shaped', about to push them forward...to the wall.

I thought the Air Force was it's own thing.

My questions is: Why does the Army get to have two schools, West Point and AFA? But the Navy only has one school and no school for the Marines.

Shouldn't the Marines have their own school and a football team?

Not sure what you are talking about...

The Air Force became it's own service in 1947; it is NOT part of the Army.

The Marine Corps is a department of the Navy.

The Coast Guard used to be part of the Defense (War) Department, but became a division of DHS when it was formed in 2002.

Yes, I just found that out. I guess I misunderstood him. I never knew the Air Force was ever part of the Army.

If you look at an older version of the “Wild Blue Yonder” lyrics instead of US Air Force it says Army Air Corps.

The Marine Corps is a department of the Navy.

The Coast Guard used to be part of the Defense (War) Department, but became a division of DHS when it was formed in 2002.

The Coast Guard became a part of the Department of Transportation a while ago in order to maintain it's policing powers while avoiding the posse comitatus act. Post 9/11 it became part of DHS.

That's not why the Coast Guard became a part of the newly formed Department of Transportation under President Kennedy. The story is nuanced and complex and had to do with legal authorities and missions adopted from agencies absorbed into what became the Coast Guard in the early 20th century.

The Coast Guard was originally formed as the Revenue Marine, a military organization with a professional officer corps and enlisted crew, as part of the US Treasury by Alexander Hamilton, first secretary of the treasury. The Revenue Marine was tasked with enforcement of customs law in US territorial waters, as well as combating piracy. As stated above, Kennedy moved the CG to transportation, and nearly 50 odd years of neglect resulted. The "modern" Coast Guard is a Frankenstein of cobbled together agencies with authorities and missions that were never even imagined when it was initially formed. That's why Kennedy thought it fit better in transportation than treasury. What did bridges, lighthouses, buoy's, search and rescue, etc, have to do with revenue enforcement? DHS is a much better home and thankfully the fleet is finally being recapitalized along with a lot of other much needed improvements, such as much better interoperability with DoD. Kind of essential when we work with the Navy and Marines on a regular basis.

Great AFA uniforms by the way.

Every joke comes with a bit of truth, this one more so than many.

Whatever floats your boat.
