Unlike the Civil ConFLiCT, this is an actual rivalry and not some insane Bob Diaco creation. These two teams have been battling it out since 1897.

Its funny how many of you Huskies brushed Umass off for years and now you kinda need us and you are changing your tune.....

I don't know if you were one of those people UConnHusky but it was certainly a high majority of UConn fans.

I don't understand the logic behind people thinking we shouldn't have brushed you guys off. We were in a BCS conference, then the best "G5" conference while you guys were struggling in the MAC and as an Independent. We have not been a good program for years, and perception is everything. If we lost to you guys, especially consistently, it would have made recruiting even harder. We were at least struggling in a better conference and could use that as an excuse when recruiting. Imagine how bad we would have looked if we were playing and losing to you consistently while underperforming in our own conference.

And UConn fans aren't changing our tune because we need you, we're changing our tune because both programs need each other if we're ever going to be even remotely successful FBS programs. We both suck and have no rivals; winnable games against a regional opponent are good for building fan support. Especially if we play the game during the same week each year and market it as our rivalry week.

This is about basketball as much as it is about football.

UMass would have played UConn any and every year in the last 30 years even if we lost every single game. UConn cut Umass out after one hoops loss in 2002 (they suddenly "could not fit" in the last 2 games of an agreed upon series with Umass)... even though UConn won all of the previous 12 hoop/football meetings leading up to that night.

They are each State's - State University. About 75 minutes apart in distance and a true dislike of each other. All the makings of a rivalry that would bring some eyes to the TV and put asses in the seats.

UConn didn't need Umass individually, but the NE Region as a whole sure would have benefited from it. A rising tide lifts all boats, but UConn wanted to be THE big dog all by themselves. Partially because Umass was starting to emerge as a real threat; and Uconn would start to lose some recruiting battles they had previously won without having to put on a fight.

We do not NEED UConn to build ourselves now and should tell you to go fuk yourself for any future game offers. We are scheduling just fine without you. But Umass isn't doing that.

As Calapari used to say "Any time, Any place, Any one"...........

As compared to Cahoon's motto "Any time (that we see fit), Any Place (in the state of Connecticut), Any One (who we can push around for a guaranteed win)".

Do you really believe that if Calipari and UMass were the better program in the better conference that they would have scheduled UConn? No way. They would have done what we did.

You don't schedule games when losing them can cost you perception and possible recruits if you have a choice. UConn had everything to lose and nothing to gain by playing UMass in basketball back then.

In football, neither of these schools have anything to lose by playing each other. If anything, it helps both. So, schedule some football games and agree to give UMass a few men's and women's hoop games. Our hoops brand has since inarguably been established as the premier New England school in that sport (men's and women's). Playing UMass now won't hurt us now like it could have then. Furthermore, the A-10 is slipping a bit now, so playing us going forward will help UMass in the SOS department (so it isn't exactly like they hold the upper hand in this relationship).

I understand that UMass fans are frustrated with the perceived treatment they have received over the years and personally, I think we should have been playing you guys. Big East Football era UConn typically would not have had any risk in playing UMass and in basketball, one game a year is not a big deal, win or lose. However, the argument that the football rivalry should have been bigger is sort of a moot point because UMass was not FBS until recently. Hell, had UMass upgraded to FBS with proper facilities at the time UConn did, who know's, you might have gotten a look from the Big East. I blame both of our states for not committing to having high level FBS programs years ago.

Why stop at just 2? Do five games all in consecutive weeks in November and call it The November to Remember series. Or just go to three and do them all on one Saturday. Lots of possibilities here to help out with travel costs and scheduling.

RE: Uconn and Umass should play twice annually
Being fair to UCONN here (which sucks to do)...UMass did just completely stop scheduling UNH after moving up to FBS, and that was another long standing rivalry dating back to 1897. Haven't played them since.

UCONN did have UMass on the schedule in 2012, so pretty early on in the FBS timeline for us, but it's only been one game since and clearly needs to be yearly. The writing may not have entirely been on the wall then, but it's been pretty evident that NE football needs a boost and all of UMass, UCONN, and BC need to get in the game of scheduling each other at least every other year (UMass and UCONN yearly though). Throw in a mix of Syracuse, Temple, and Rutgers for good measure - though clearly not all of them every year for each team.

I think they should play 11 times per year....and the winner of the series wins the MASS-CT Toll Booth Trophy. (Save one game for a non-conf game).

Connecticut doesn't have tolls on any of our highways so does that mean UConn automatically wins or loses that?
