ESPN seems to be turning corner in AAC coverage
Watching the two AAc games last night, it appeared to me that ESPN has decided to become pro AAC in its spin. I suspect they have made a decision that they need our conference to do well in order to protect their new investment. I wonder if they eventually try to push us into a power 6 position with a new years slot as well. Time will tell.

It was part of the new contract. There was a blurb in there that they would promote the conference.

But the new contract hasn't kicked in yet... I believe it's because football will be much more respectable with new coaching staff at ECU and other coaching hires are paying dividend (-1,butt they are leaving) so ESPN is happy.

yeah they are unsure how to go about it. i watched the bearcat game and saw them mention that we were a P6 conference and then immediately show a info graphic about G5 teams. it will smooth itself out and eventually they'll go along with the whole P6 thing.

The only way to get the P6 marketing to stick is if ESPN promotes it. Hopefully they will as it only helps ESPN in the long run. We are dance partners for awhile

We have to win against the P5 and clearly separate from the G4 statistically (including attendance) to give ESPN something substantial to market. I hope the Tigers do our part on Saturday.

RE: ESPN seems to be turning corner in AAC coverage
If we have a really strong showing this year as a conference, I can see the AAC being included in some kind of special slot when the new playoff deal is made. They wont give us equal money to P5, but we deserve a much bigger share than the G4 are getting. At east double, which will be about $1.5 million for each team. With our NCAA credits and all, the AAC should be making $11-12 million a year.

I was expecting this to happen with the last contract. I guess now it makes more sense for them with the way longer term.

12 years is an eternity in regards to the current contract. ESPN is going to start up the hype machine for the next 3 years, and then milk the dividends for the following 9.

They have to invest in their property. ESPN is in large THE mouthpiece for college football. Having the contract with them gets us 10x more exposure than it would have with fox or CBS or a lesser third party. Aresco understands we are still building our brand and just as important as the tv contract each teams ability to build its brand benefits enrollment, third party merch sales, recruiting, attendance, and athletic fund donations. The fact that we will get about 3 to 4 of our games on ESPN's flagship stations, espn, abc, espn2, every week means a lot. As does being mention more on sports center, gameday, other broadcast, and the vast network of ESPN radio.

Had some current Ole Miss students in town (my cousins) this past week, they aren't too optimistic going into Memphis. Go Memphis!

RE: ESPN seems to be turning corner in AAC coverage
American is the plucky underdogs now.

For a long time ESPN's favorite underdogs were Boise & the Mountain West. Then the 3 best MWC teams left & Boise stayed so good for so long that they're no longer underdogs.

ESPN know that fans love an underdog story. But the underdog has to make it close & win often enough to keep it interesting. Everyone wants to watch David beat Goliath, but no one cares if UCLA beats San Diego State for the 16th straight time (UCLA is 15-0 against SDSU all-time) or Notre Dame beats Army for the 16th straight time (ND is 15-0 against Army since 1960).

RE: ESPN seems to be turning corner in AAC coverage
I think the growth of the SEC Network and now the ACC Network really helps a lot too. More and more games are being shown on those networks, opening up more available slots on ESPN (which we can fill). Take that #1 Clemson vs Georgia Tech game last night. It was on the ACC Network. Had there been no ACC Network it may have bumped Cincy vs UCLA from ESPN, or possibly bumped someone out of a slot on Saturday. I think having these P5 conference networks allows us to get more airtime on ABC/ESPN/ESPN2.

Correct...as SECN and ACCN plus the B1G Network all take away some inventory from ESPN, ESPN2, ESNPU, etc...

Of course in the future, some AAC Games will be only available on ESPN+ too.

PS. Somewhat similar to what ESPN did last night putting the first ACCN game involving #1 Clemson...back when ESPN2 was launched...one of their biggest gets was one of the 2 annual Duke/UNC Basketball games...and games like that helped ESPN2 get on more cable systems (some cable systems WAY back then didn't think there would ever be a need of TWO sports channels).

Given that they

1) Are going to be required to fill even more ABC/ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU slots with AAC content than before

2) And are hoping AAC content will help drive ESPN+ subscriptions

It kinda makes sense to promote the conference rather than belittle it. 04-cheers
